Window repair - process / costs?

Hi all,

So, my drivers side window was broken when I bought the car - and I have only just had the time to look into getting it fixed. You can hear the motor when you press the up button, but not the down button.

The garage I bought the car from said it was a simple job, and would do it for £200 (the price the took off the car because of it) - however they are a long way from me, and hard to get to.

So, I took it a local independent who want: £320 to fix it + £55 to investigate the problem, if it is just an actuator/alternator (or something), and then more again if it is the motor as well or instead - so well over £400 (my warranty MAY cover the motor apparently)

So, this raises the question: what is a fair price to take the door off and fix the window - assuming it is the actuator or assuming it is the motor or both? - Anyone had this done before? - Is circa £400 fair and the garage that sold me the car telling me porkies, or is the indy ripping me off because I'm 22 (look 18 :[] ) and it's a porsche?

Thanks in advance - any help appreciated.

Not sure how they could quote £320 to fix it plus £55 to investigate...... Where are you located? Someone here might be able to make a recommendation. It is likely to be the window regulator (the cable and track mechanism) which is causing the problem. The list price of these is £115+VAT. Worst case would be the motor has gone at £154+VAT, but because to can hear it running, albeit in one direction, that's unlikely.. You would probably need a door membrane in either case (£37+VAT). Book time to change the whole lot is 1.6 hours, so at an indy you could reckon on £80-100+VAT for the labour. Hope this helps.

Thanks very much guys - I will negotiate.. and failing that... Move onto another garage. I'm located in Guildford, Surrey. Thanks again.
