Windows lowering and weak start up - trip mileage resets??? HELP

My 2001 2.7 (62k ) seems to have a problem when starting. As you turn the key both windows lower then close (like when you pull the roof handle) and the trip milage display on the dash flashes and re-sets to 0000. Also yesterday after doing this and starting sluggishly the alarm went off as I drove away, so I stopped, removed key, reset alarm with key and tried again, its started (again sluggishly) and allowed me to drive home. There are no electrical problems at any other time, just on start up. Its booked into OPC but has this happened to anyone else?? Any Idea of the cause or possible solution and cost - Many Thanks - S2RJN

weak batteries cause all sorts of electrical glitches - at 5 years old i suspect your battery is on its last legs (assuming its the original) - look for a Bosch silver series as a replacement

The same thing happened to me in June (battery 4 yrs old). Battery died and new one required.

Wear a pair of ear defenders whilst you're changing the battery (I couldn't manage to stop the alarm sounding so in the end just endured it for a couple of minutes and then took some wine round to the neighbours[;)])

PS Don't take it to the OPC, it'll cost you far more than it needs.

Before disconnecting the battery, put the key in the ignition & turn to the first position. That should prevent the alarm going off.

Hi - had my battery replaced by an independent in Yorkshire for £86 - they did the key in lock trick so no deafening noise - but it lost the radio code.

Thanks everyone, turns out is was the battery. When I was at the OPC (cardiff) getting my perspex rear window replaced they charged the battery for me FOC!!! - happy days. My baby is now back to its old self! I realise that the battery is on its last legs and this solution isn't the long term answer but I'll get the new battery when required as I can now recognise the syptoms and know the solution thanks to you guys - many thanks!
