windscreen antenna booster

I am about to have the windscreen taken out of my targa---the radio reception is very poor--my assumption is that the connection to the booster has not been made properly--being a complete novice to this, what will I need to do to ensure that the radio works and the booster is connected effectively---any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

Steve,

Are you taking the windscreen out solely because of the antenna problem??? The most common cause of the poor reception is that the head unit has been changed and the power supply from the head unit to the antenna amplifier has not been connected. If there was a problem with the screen antenna I'd be surprised if you got ANY signal. I think it's worth checking the power to the amplifier first since taking the screen out will almost certainly cost you a new screen - they will invariably break it!!!

thanks for that--no I am taking the screen out anyway -- so I wanted to make sure that I made the best of it---yes you are tight it is a new head unit that a previous owner put in the car---I have looked through the workshop manual and it isn't clear how to connect the power from the head unit to the amplifier---sorry to be ignorant but what steps do I need to take.

Thanks

You should have either a blue or black wire from the back of your head unit marked 'ANT'.

This connects to the wire that runs with the coax from the antenna amp box.

If nothing is marked up, try measuring the voltage of the spare wires from the HU. Your looking for one the only powers up when you either switch the radio on or the unit itself(depending on HU make/model).

If this is not possible, give your local ICE shop a ring and ask them to ID the wire colour for your HU. Most looms are colour coded.

One thing tho' don't connect the antenna to the amp remote, I think they push out to much voltage for the booster!

Thans for the advice---I had to resort to reading the HU manual to find the correct lead---I connected this to the black one attached tothe aerial lead--with a bit more messing around and the radio now works perfectly.

Thanks again

Steve
