Windscreen chips

Hi all,

Was wanderiing what peoples thoughts are of autoglass, have just called them to carry out a repair on Friday. Was toying with the idea of putting a complete new front screen in as lots of tiny chips everywhere apart from one which has been filled before. Now i have a 2nd chip there coming out to fill.

I was tempted to get them to replace the whole window as all they wanted was £70 as part of excess and looking at a.mannings insur' booklet it doesnt affect the no claims. I was just wandering if people had any experience with them in fitting a new front window in the front of the 993 and if they fitted a proper Porsche window and how good the job was.

pref' I would like a new window but unsure if i would be opening a can of worms with it squeaking when there currently just coming at present to fill it. Im in 2 minds to ring back & tell them to replace it altogether. Any thoughts ???

Cheers

I've had two windscreens (well three really becauese the first one was scratched and they had to replace it !) done by Autoglass in the last 18 months and no problems with them at all, they even transfered my Porsche club sticker successfully ! The only strange thing is my windscreen was still the original after 90,000 miles, then I've had two stone hits that were bad enough to warrant changing the screen in 18 months, are stones getting bigger, is it global warming, am I getting paranoid ??????????

hi i had a new one done by them 2 years ago, it did sqweek afterwards, i had my opc put tape on to keep it quiet. what i should have done is get it done at there place they clamp it in for a while instead for it to set & dry out instead of hands on, which is not enough even thou there were two of them & me!

Have had a new screen fitted by autoglass this week and its took 3 attempts to get it right - first time they forgot to put on the internal rubber seal!!!! second time they damaged the outer rubber seal - third time lucky!!

I always ask for the specialist and say I want a before and after inspection, they then send there best man. I would suggest you invest in the teflon tape, though davepaul993 suggestion is the way to go

in case helpful, i'm about to have mine replaced... autoglass are supplying but not fitting... from what i've read/heard, a badly fitted screen could damage the paint around the frame, posisbly causing corrosion in the future... I'm having a 993 specialist fit the screen to make sure the job is done right...

not suggesting autoglass will do a bad job, more for my peace of mind i guess...

Its not autoglass, its the bloke who fits it thats important. Just make sure he has fitted a screen to Porsches before, if not, ask for another.
I have had two screens fitted by autoglass both by the same guy who specialised in porsches. Give autoglass their due they are aware of our feelings.

I had a nightmare replacing my windscreen. Autoglass had 3 attempts and could not get it fitted correctly. They also damaged my paint, I had water getting in, squeeks and creaks. It went to another company who had two attempts, they also managed to splice the arial cable ( dont think they even new it was there ). In the end I found someone who works for himself and fits all the windscreens for a Porsche approved repairer. He fitted it perfectly, it did creak very slightly and I mean slightly, so I purchased some PTFE spray from Halfords to spray under the rubbers and it is as quite as a mouse. I can just hear creaks now from the sunroof etc.
The chap I used is based in Nottigham, but does travel. He removed my genuine Porsche screen and refiited it.
