Windscreen for 1989 MY 3.2 Carrera

Hi all,

Does anyone know the correct part number for a 1989 model year 3.2 Carrera with green top tint and radio connection on the right hand ottom corner?

Autoglass in MK have been trying to replace mine but they have had three screens delivered so far and none of them fitted! This was either because the radio ariel connection was in the wrong place or one was physically too big! I am not knocking Autoglass as they are doing there best and the fitter has lots of experience with 911's but the manufacturer cataologs seem to be pretty ambigous when it comes to 3.2's. No matter which one they order it seems to be wrong!

They are now contacting an OPC and having them order one which they will then go and fetch so it 'should' be the right one next time but I'd like to know if anyone knows from their own experience.

Cheers

Andy

What happened on this one Andy ?

I'm interested because Edward gifted me a 964 screen rubber on the understanding that it would be compatible with my screen (the 964 rubber it is the same as used on the 3.2 MY'89 cars in theory).

I am still waiting for Autoglass to have the screen delivered from the OPC. If its the right one (4th time lucky) then I'll be done.

As far as I can make out this whole thing is really confusing.....

All, some or non of the following facts may be right or wrong. I have no idea

from early cars up to some point in the 89 Model Year glass is the same and rubber is the same - any should fit any pre 964
At some point mid 89 MY they switched to the trimless rubber - this used on 964 as well - 964 screen will fit pre 964 but only with 964 rubber
At some point after this the rubber MAY have been changed to a slightly different type - 964 screen will not fit pre 964 when used with newer 964 rubber
The actual aperture of the 911's and 964's are the same its only the depth of the 964 aperture that changed by 5 mm.
Some people report finding it impossible to fit 964 screens in 911's
Some people report finding it easy to fit 964 screens in 911's
My fitter had one screen delivered that was 5mm too big. I assumed he meant height or width but not sure. If so does this imply different aperture sizes?

Of course as well as getting the actual fitting right you need the correct tint/top tint and if you have the aerial in the screen the connector location can by on the right hand side or in the middle.

No one should use any of the above as basis for buying windscreens. At this point I am clueless

If anyone can provide any further facts then it would be nice to hear.

Does the 964 screen rubber have the metal trim insert in it like my 3.2 and all previous 911's do (AFAIK)?
Does anyone have a very late 3.2 Carrera with the 964 rubber trim?
If anyone has fitted a 964 screen in a 911 what was the part number and what rubber was used?

Cheers

Hi Andy ,my screen has loads of small chips in it and would like to replace it .Could you tell me how much i would be looking at paying ?
Cheers

No idea I'm afraid. Insurance is paying for mine and because they cocked up and didn't put an excess value on my certificate it isnt going to cost me a bean!

This is worth checking... Autoglass wanted 40 quid excess when they checked my policy with Royal Sun Alliance but because the certificate didnt have any excess value stated RSA conceeded they would have to honour it.

If I can find out how much Autoglass paid when its done I'll let you know.

Cheers

I can probably supply the info needed tomorrow as I've got an OPC invoice for mine (top tint RHS aerial) in my file at home.

Autoglass had trouble with mine as well - the mirror socket on their 'pattern' screens was somewhere around the middle of the screen - after trying 2 different ones I insisted they get a real Porsche one - no problems at all. I also asked that they replaced the metal inserts as they were showing signs of being removed a couple of times and they did this without a problem.

Roy

My apologies to all - this completely slipped my mind (a combination of old age and hard work!) - I will endeavour to post the info promised as soon as possible

Thanks ,
Might live with the few minor chips at present (you can bet if i were to replace mine with a nice new one it would become a magnet for some VERY large stones!!)
Cheers
