Windscreen motor arm ball bearing bad stuff

Hello again (question #3 for today),

I'm having a bit of trouble with my windscreen motor arm... Specifically, the motor is connected to a long arm which the connects to the two windscreen wiper arms via ball joints (hope that makes sense).

The problem is that one of the ball joints is slightly loose and keeps on popping out... Are there any clever tricks to sort it out without having to replace the two arms?

Many thanks as always.
Alex

What age is your car because there is a difference in the wiper mechs, If it is a later car I assume it is the short arm between the motor and the drivers wiper that is the problem (cup worn). If so the part is about £7.00 from your OPC and it is a straight forward fit. If the ball has worn, a new mech will be required costing significantly more, and a morning to fit. But I would try the short arm first.

The ball was worn on mine and it kept falling off and a new arm made no difference. I sleeved the ball on mine and it's been fine since.

The part is cheap enough from OPC but for a quick fix strong elastic bands will sort it by wrapping around the joint

Thanks a lot guys...

Its an '88 so I'm guessing its the later... all suggestions sound good, but not sure what exactly "sleeving" the ball means - what do you sleeve it with?

Thanks!
Alex

I sleeved it with several "layers" of heat-shrink tubing, which I shrunk on to the ball. I then packed the cup with lithium grease and it went back together with a satisfying "over-centre" click. It's been fine since although many said that it wouldn't work. No-one seems to believe me still! [&:]

Ah, thanks - ingenious I must say, I'll give it a go.

Does anyone know what the part number for the cup is? I can't seem to to find it on pelicanparts - they only have the old style setup.

Thanks,
A
