Is it possible to repair stone chips and cracks 944 windscreens?I've got a couple of chips on mine and i'm wandering if they can be repaired or ultimately is it going to lead to a change of windscreen.

Hi 944Cabby
I had my screen replaced with the insurance picking up everything after the £50.00 excess, I trusted the man from the RAC and he did a fantastic job, Screen had to come from the Factory in Germany so had to wait 2 weeks, I couldnt fault them.......and I'm a real pain in the a**e about people like that touching my car

So, are the chips completely un-noticable now?
Just checked my insurance and it's £60 excess on my policy so i think i'll give norwich union a call.

Hi,

Yep, it was a really good repair, not sure what they use, but it is very clever

They were a bit stressed at working on a Porsche windscreen, as they said that there is a small chance that the screen could crack whilst the repair was being done, but my screen was fine.

Cracking is more likely the longer ago it happened as it's down to dirt and the pressure they apply. I called about getting 2 fixed on the hearse and they asked if either was bigger than a £1 coin. One was so it got a new screen; 2 In fact as the first had the wrong sensor for auto wipers and lights.

I've just had a small crack repaired on the wife's Mini. They brought along another screen just in case it wasn't repairable. Getting the crack repaired didn't cost me anything on excess but if the screen needed replacement it would have cost me the £50 excess.

I can't think of any reason why the 944 screen couldn't be repaired just like any other cars screen so I would rely on the advice from the repaires.

I think stone chips can be repaired invisibly but the small crack in the wifes windscreen is still noticable if you know where to look but at least it wont grow any more which is the problem with cracks.

Some of my colleagues have the kit required to repair chipped windscreens and I watched one done today. He actually grinds the chip even deeper with a tool a bit like a dentists drill [] and then injects a clear resin into the resulting crater which is then heated and bonded into place.

This one was totally invisible when he'd finished, but like most things its all down to the size and age of the chip so I'd check your Yellow Pages and get someone out to have a look. Most windscreen places do these types of repair and most insurers will pay for them to be done F.O.C rather than have to fork out £££ for a new screen. Check your policy though - there have been cases where it has affected NCB discount next year []

Just got around to contacting Autoglass about my windscreen via Norwich Union and it's now booked into telford autoglass this coming monday for a complete replacement windscreen which has cost me the excess of £60 which i'm well happy about (not affecting my NCB either).
As i've got 3 actual chips (not obstructing vision though) and several small ones dotted around the screen they won't repair but have to replace as they're legally only allowed to repair 4 cracks on a screen according to their advisor.
Happy days.[:D]

Good choice going for a new screen.
Had the windscreen replaced on my 944 when I had the car resprayed. What I difference it made, so much clearer you had to reming yourself it was the same car.
Get some new wiper blades fitted at the same time.
Cheers,

Always the one to put a damper on things []

The 944 screen is bonded in so, to get it out, they have to cut and scrape the existing seal material from within the windscreen recess. Quite a scary process with plenty of opportunities to scratch through the paintwork in the windscreen recess. Once the new windscreen is in you don't see any damage but who knows what will happen if a rust worm breaks out as a result of any damage.

I've had to have two new screens so far. They look very nice but it is perhaps preferable not to watch how it is done. Ignorance is bliss.

If you can I'd get the current screen repaired or, if still legal, leave well alone. Sods law states that as soon as you replace a screen the new one will get chipped.
