Windscreen Replacement / Repaint

My windscreen had for sometime had a nasty crack that had developed in to several inches long and needed to be replaced (Autoglass had confirmed they could not repair it).

I decided that whilst it was in at Francis Tuthill having the 12K mile service and B-Post repair done, I might as well get them to replace the swindcreen at the same time (the Insurers Liverpool Victoria were quite happy with this).

The windscreen removal exposed minor surface rust, but no penetration and a little time spent with a grinder / wire brush soon had it ready for painting. The scuttle in front of the windscreen where the wipers mount was then painted, and new rubber strips fitted between it and the wings. A new windscreen seal was also fitted.

The attached photos were taken by Francis Tuthill during the job at my request, and then e-mailed to me (another valuable part of their excellent service). I like to have a good documented picture history of what I have done to the car.

Well, what a difference a new screen makes. It is surprising how many marks there are on an original screen that you just get used to.

Ian, looks like a job well done. I need to get mine done as I have a little rust around the bottom of the drivers side windscreen. Also the windscreen could do with being replaced. Its not cracked but looks very potmarked. Can I ask what it roughly cost you?

The cost of the screen and seal was £540 including labour and VAT, but I only pay the £50 excess as mine was broken.

The cost to 'refurbish' the scuttle and repaint (the finish around the wipers was poor before and needed cleaning out and smoothing for painting) was £220 plus VAT.

I wasn't aware there was a flush fit seal available, so I didn't consider it !
