Windscreen Replacement

Morning,

I've noticed a chip / crack in my windscreen which unfortunately looks too large for repair meaning I need a new screen.

On my "˜modern' cars I would just get it done at Autoglass, or equivalent, via my insurance. Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, of having a replacement screen fitted at somewhere like Autoglass?

Are they able to source the correct screen? Are there things to look out for, other than that it fits(!), to make sure the screen is correct? I thought there might be complications with having the aerial in the screen for example.

You shouldn't have any problems getting a windscreen fitted they are readily available. Any decent fitter will have no problems fitting it for you.
 
My top tip is to remove the A-pillar trims first, stops the back of them getting accidentally cut or covered in goo.
 
I had my screen replaced via my insurance last Sumer and insisted that it was a Porsche screen fitted with the antenna built in. It was worth the £100 excess as the screen is about £430 plus the new trim and Autoglass were the approved installers who did an excellent job. Worth noting that Porsche only had Top Tint screens in the warehouse.
 
Auto glass replaced my windscreen last year when I had my car resprayed, they came out & removed the old screen then once the paint job was complete I contacted them again & they returned to fit the new one complete with a new rubber etc. I had it done through my insurance but contacted the local depot myself to arrange times etc. Excellent service & happy with the result.
 
Similar experience here with Autoglass - they replaced the windscreen in my '86 944 in December. The first time they came they brought the wrong screen and the second time they brought the right screen complete with integral antenna - took them several hours to do mind you, but in the end a good job. The radio even works now as the fitter said the previous screen wiring for the antenna wasn't connected...!
 
Autoglass also did my S2 screen under insurance a few years back and did a fine job. DO remove the A-pillar trim (3 screws each side) and the interior roof trim that runs along the top of the windscreen. They're easy to cut / damage when the old screen is being taken out and it is also easy for the fitter to inadvertently seal them into place when fitting the new screen. It should take you no more than 15 minutes to remove the trim pieces and they're no longer available if they get damaged.
 
Is it possible to re-fit a screen that has been removed or does it get destroyed in the removal process? Mine needs to come out for rust repairs on the roof at the top edge of the screen. I will leave it screenless for the full respray but it would be nice refit the original and to save myself the cost of a new screen if possible. Anyone know?

It is possible. Mine came out for a respray and some repairs to the window aperture last year and was re-fitted without a problem. There is a caveat, however. The 944 screens have a tendency to de-laminate (usually starting in the bottom corners) and an old screen may not survive the removal process. My screen was quite new (only 18 months old at the time) and so was a relatively safe bet.
 
Autoglass did mine last year, the guy had worked for them many years and had done quite a few 944's in the past [:)]
 
Why is a 944 windscreen any different from the hundreds of models they have to fit new screens to every year? It's their job! I agree that the trim should be removed as above, it makes sense to avoid the risk of damage, but they shouldn't really be damaging anything on any car. I'd say take it to the workshop, not expect the best service out in all weathers, and chat to the fitters. If they see that the car is important to you, they will take a bit more care. Autoglass did the screen in my Lux. They did pull in their most experienced fitter when I booked it, as I could work around their best times, so it's worth explaining what you want, how precious the car is, etc. [:)]
 
REMOVE THE A PILLAR TRIM !!! They will catch and damage it with the cheesecutter wire when removing the screen, non top gradient screens are no longer available from Porsche. Mike Moores a pillar trims were damaged after i told him to remove the trims, they are no longer available in the colour required from OPC and he cannot find any seconhand [X(]
