Windscreen replacement?

Hi all,

A chip that was repaired on my windscreen, has after 2 years started to deteriorate.
When I run my fingernail on it, it is no longer smooth and bits of glass powder come out.

I called Autoglass and they said that a repair is not possible on a chip that was previously repaired so the whole windscreen would need to be changed.

From any of you that have experience of this....what is the best way for me to move forward?
Autoglass say that can replace it but it won't be Porsche OEM...If I call my insurer (Groupama) and insist on my OPC changing it, is that a better idea?

Thanks in advance

I know some owners that have been successful in having a genuine part fitted, others not so...

Photos before they do it, and after... also if you have Sat nav, check that they have refitted the aerial correctly as I've seen loads of threads about Sat-navs not working after a screen fitted.

If you are unsure about using Autoglass and their use of OEM glass try:

http://www.glasstecauto.co.uk/

They are based out of North London and I hear only good things about these guys including the use of Porsche glass and I also believe he maybe able to deal with the insurance side of things.

Ask for Paul aka 'Glassman' on Pistonheads

If possible be there and watch them carefully. Autoglass did my 968 coupe a few years ago, and I'm almost certain they damaged the galvanising in the nearside top corner but said nothing and hid it under the seal. A couple of years went by, and suddenly I have the paint bubbling up due to corrosion underneath - the only time I have ever had indications of corrosion on the car. Fixing that properly was a large part of the recent £505 bill for sorting 3 minor blemishes on the car!

Was ensured with Groupama and had the replacement done at Porsche West London who instructed Autoglass to fit an OEM windscreen. On pick-up the seal looked a bit different than the previous 4 years of fitted screen and driving proved that at 35miles an hour the windnoise started to build up. Took the car back to Porsche and of course neither they, nor Autoglass had driven the car with the replaced windscreen. I then had to re-book the car with Autoglass directly as I refused to sign-off the installation. It took another week for the correct installation and I was there for the entire time for the issues reported above. So, Groupama will sanction an OEM screen as long as you pay your access and my advice is to be there for the installation and to take it for a drive before signing off any work.

Arrange for it to be done with your OPC and request that an OEM screen is fitted.

It's doubtful they will do the job themselves but they will supply the parts and will ensure everything works satisfactorily. Will probably cost you around £75 windsccreen insurance excess.

Regards,

Clive.

i was offered autoglass to come and do my 993.bearing in mind the appalling job they did on the previous screen i opted to get it done with porsche tech and screen-did beautiful job -cost £575 and insurance company contributed a whopping £80.now with porsche insurance .

There is a company called Glass Doctor that will, in many instances, repair screens that have already had a repair. In my experience the quality of their work is far superior to other windscreen company repairs. See if they have got an operator in your area.

Even my OPC isn't qualified to fit a windscreen. The car has to go to the authorised Porsche bodyshop and there's no way I'd have anyone else do it. I had an issue with Directline about this who initially insisted that I use Autoglass. After multiple calls to Directline, they agreed to pay the bodyshop directly and I got what I wanted.

I called Autoglass and they said that a repair is not possible on a chip that was previously repaired so the whole windscreen would need to be changed.

But they say that so they can sell the whole windscreen - talk to others - someone will repair it for you.

My insurance company will only cover a new screen up to £260, believed Highway Windscreens!

I would not trust any of the common replacement companies to replace my screen having heard and seen so many horror stories, mine has sat nav and telephone module.

I contacted OPC in Cambridge who would replace the screen with all OPC parts for £635.24 including PCGB discount.

This is the route I will go and see if I can get some money back from my insurance company.

Whats the use of having comprehensive insurance with glass cover if you cannot get it done under insurance to a quality level[].

Interesting note: Our insurance company has just put the excess up from £60 to £120 pounds for the windscreen.

With us paying more perhaps we could demand a better (my choice of installer) service.

Maybe I am just dreaming again!!!

Hi all,

Well the Autoglass man has come and gone this morning.
He repaired the chip...and it has gone smooth again which is good.
It hasn't really improved it's appearance though and looks a bit unsightly.

Called Autoglass and asked for a windscreen replacement...with an OEM screen.

When they turn up to replace it....how will I know it's an OEM screen?

Quick question....as the fitter is coming tomorrow, do they change the seal aswell,,,or any rubber parts?

Well, incase anyone is interested.....Autoglass arrived this morning with an OEM screen and did a fantastic job in just under 2 hours.

Alls well that ends well

So your screen has the 'Porsche triangle' on it then? (Something like this):

Hi Nick,

I'll look out for it...where is that supposed to be on the screen?
It does say St Gobain...Belgium...the same markings as on my previous screen....
