Windscreen replacement

I have a cracked screen and will be replacing it..
It is AA windscreen service through the insurance. They say the replacement will be OE.
Does anybody have any experience with windscreen replacement and should the rubber surround be replaced ?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Heard many rumours about structural integrity of windscreen etc, so when mine recently chipped and cracked, had porsche replace whilst undertaking 111 point check. They billed separately to warranty extension, MOT etc and insurance said happy to reimburse me - so claim now off in the post

gives you an alternate

cheers darren

It's a bonded screen, so all the surrounding trim should be replaced. The main trick is to centralise the replacement screen since you only get one shot at it.

Goog luck.

Clive.

There is a bloke called glassman over on pistonheads. Was very helpful when I had a problem recently with my Volvo - saved me having to replace the screen at all. If you are anywhere near London would certainly recommend him. Andrew

Autoglass did my screen twice, because the first install was off-center but hard to spot on a visual inspection. It only became apparent when I took the car on the road and you could hear the windnoise at 35mph. So, centering is important without breaking the radio connector and ensuring that the rubber seal sits equally on glass and frame - it needs to be done by someone who is familiar with the vehicle and has done it before IMHO.

I had a stone hit me as couple of weeks back - and I couldnt find the impact. Today I spotted a 6 inch long crack coming up from under my window-wiper - and following it back, a massive impact being hidden just under the wiper.

So I need a replacement window for sure.

Called my insurance co and they said if I have it done with RAC Auto Windscreens then its a £75 excess. If I have it done at my OPC then it will be more as not approved.

Think I am going to take the OPC route as I want it done correctly.

Alex,

I think you'll find your OPC will also use a specialist third party fitter, but at least they'll use a genuine Porsche screen and make sure it's fitted correctly.

Regards,

Clive.

Same here, I had Exeter OPC arrange it all and the windscreen was replaced by a third party acceptable to my insurance company at my home for only the small excess.

Had mine replaced on my 996C4S last year at Cambridge OPC rather than trust anyone else with it as my insurance company wanted to use Highway Windscreens!
It cost more but was a proper job and of course a genuine Porsche WS and fitting kit.[:)]

I had a windscreen go on my las 997.1 C4S and used Autoglass - never again. Not aligned/trim re-used/left off sat nav connection. Spent few days at OPC getting fixed. Had one go early on new 997.2 Turbo S and used local OPC. Perfect job (although 3rd party as someone else commented). Aviva wouldn't pay the extra as not approved is only downside. Autoglass screen was not OE despite the centres assurances it was. Its made at the same factory apparently, just hasn't got the logo on. Yeah, right!!

Hope you get it sorted.

Had my 987 done a few years ago by i think Auto Glass and asked the question is it official Porsche and they said no .I insisted they used a Porsche approved one and they ok it . I believe it should be marked Saint Gobenn.
I know it was original as i phoned up the local opc and asked the question to be told they had ordered one from them and where collecting it .
I asked for a fitter who had worked on Porsche before and they send a guy who had .the job was fine did it in my garage at home so i could see what was being done .Took a good few hours but have had no problems with job

Thats answered my question... just about to ring them about my screen! []

They'd better cover it as the OPC is charging £870 for a new windscreen!!

I was told that OPC Reading at least have their own people that do it ie. no 3rd party.

Phew - just got confirmation from AON that as long as I pay the full amount myself, and then submit the invoice to them that I will get the whole lot back minus £75 excess.
