Windscreen replcement

Need some advice here.

Did a PCGB trackday at CastleCombe 3 weeks ago, all good clean fun. On the way home I picked up a stone chip which has now developed into a major crack. It's the original screen. I've heard some horror stories about creaks and growns when these are replaced by non Porsche outfits who your insurance co will want me to use.

Would you take to a Porsche dealer to have done?

There was a thread on this I thought but seems more than a year ago.

Any advice/benefit of experience appreciated.

Thanks!

Poor removal and fitting of the front and rear screens is one of the major sources of corrosion on these cars. I would have thought that an OPC would get a screen specialist in to do the job, why not ask them?
I would recommend 2+1 Windscreens if you are in the Sussex area, we use them for all our screen work.

Hello there
Dont worry about a non Porsche installer fitting your screen as they get an independant installer to fit it anyway[I would think]the most important thing is that a geniune screen is used.Porsche use a company called Sekurit for their auto glass. This will be stamped on the screen in the bottom centre. The other thing I would suggest above all is that you get a new moulding[factory part very important this time]as these quite often dont fit as well once they have been removed.Your screen I would think is urethaned in place and shouldnt make any undue noises. You may have an air leak in the seal which is not a major to sort out. Most of the screens I fit are Chinese simply because of the cost and the quality is fine.Having said that mine will get a geniune item when its needed

Ask around or speak to local independant and ask who is good.

I think the thing to avoid is the removal of the screen , taking off paint and then just banging another in.

When it is out use it as an opportunity to make sure all is well around the screen and deal with any issues whilst the glass is out.

Obviously make sure that the screen aerial is installed correctly too.

Kind regards

Thanks all for responding, taking to Swindon Porsche Centre to get a genuine one fitted, will let you know how I get on

Cheers

Mine was replaced a few months back. Just noticed there is now small gap between seal and body/scuttle about 3 inches long. I can push seal down to get rid of gap but it seems to move back up glass to expose gap again after a while.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Thanks
Piers

The solution may be to replace the outer seal, which is only £25 from Porsche. They do tend to shrink. It's very easy to replace yourself, it just presses into a groove

Thanks Nick, so there's no way the screen has been put in wrong? And you're sure even I(!) could fit a new rubber surround?!

Your screen is set in with urethane-this is like a harder version of silicon without the elasticity and is much much stronger.Your moulding can not be fitted after the urethane has cured and it is definately not a good idea to remove the moulding yourself as you will not get it back in place!!
Take it back but it would be a good idea to make sure that you havre no scratching on the A pillars and roof once you get it back.Check the work when the installer is there or before you take it away
