Windscreen washer pump question

Good afternoon
Please can someone help me. Is there a difference between windscreen washer pumps for a 3.2 and for a 964?

I know the part numbers are different and the pumps are in different positions (3.2 in front area and 964 in the bottle) but is the 'power' of the pumps different?

The reason I ask is that my pump died. I went to buy a new one and the 964 pump was a quarter of the price of one for a 3.2 so I bought the 964 one. Hooked it up and it runs but doesn't want to pump anything through. I can suck liquid through so there are no blockages. It doesn't want to pump.

Please help.
Thanks
Mike

The water resevoir will have a layer of a jelly/slim like substance in the bottom, years of screen wash fluids and water going manky. This then blocks the pickup and usually results in the pump burning out. Most people just replace the pump and check the system between that and the jets, then a new pump is needed again after a couple of years. Do it properly and remove the tank and blast it out with a jet washer. Pumps are only about £25, its enough though for a crappy pump though. Some Volvos and Mercs have the same one of similar vintage. I sourced 4 at my local scrappy. The Volvo had two fitted, can't remember which model it was square though. Might have been a 760 or 240?

What are the symptoms of the pump failing? My screenwash stopped functioning a couple of months ago. It still makes sounds like it's pumping but there's a pathetic spurt of water that only just reaches the windscreeen then nothing. I've checked the reservoir and it seems full (as is the intensive screen wash reservoir).

I was doing some trial and error testing today and I noticed a big puddle of water under the car after repeated tests. On tracing this, I found it was coming from the cap of the intensive screen wash (ie, the one inside the luggage compartment) - every time I applied the screen wash, water spurted out of the cap of the intensive screen (it has a small air hole - is it meant to have this?). Made a right old mess, so i've left it to dry.

I'm no engineer but it seems to be behaving like there's pressure in the system upstream and is seeking the least line of resistace, back up the feeds into the intensive wash reservoir.

Any thoughts on what to check next? You said you'd blown through to check that the lines are clear. How d'you do this? The intensive wash doesn't work either, if that helps.

Cheers

Check the one way valves behind the cardboard cover. (just remove the four screws and take it off). There are a bunch of them there controlling the pressure from the main and intensive bottles. One or more will have failed leading to you pressurising the intensive bottle. They're pennies to buy from Type911 or an OPC. Change the lot and the jobs done.

I may have a spare 3.2 pump and valves. I went through replacing all of the above to find it was the tank that needed flushed. There is a filter mesh that clogs up.

The main problem was getting the metal tank holder back together to allow the screw back in.

I'll have a look as I may have binned it since I sold my 3.2 Binned!

It is a VW golf mk 2 part I think.

thanks Twinny - will try this when it gets a bit warmer out in the garage.
I've got a working 3.2 pump as well if you need it as I've dumped off the Bournemouth sized water tank. As mines basically a track oriented car I've hooked up the system to run from just the intensive bottle.

I replaced mine with a very cheap one from Halfords, granted not original, but weighed a lot less and is adequate if not quite like a firemans hose.

Mind you I have cleaned the sludge from the pipes and water reservoir....

Hey there Twinny!

All good mate, thought I would see whats going on over here and add my 2 cents.... things going well with your new motor? Ive been keeping an eye and will catch you on the IB site, before we get wrapped for messing this thread ....[;)]

Thanks for the help on this thread. I'm now all fixed. I bought four replacement valves from the OPC - a few pounds each - and started replacing one-by-one. The metal clips sealing these to the hoses were a bugger to remove without distorting them. There's a good thread, on the 944 Forum I think, giving advice here. Stick with it. After one replaced, the system still didn't work, and the pressure in the system squirted leaks from the re-sealed but now pretty distorted metal clips, as well as the intensive wash washer bottle. I'd taken the precaution of buying a few new clips from Pelican Parts but I think you then need the specialist crimping tool to re-seal them, so iI didn't use them. Cold weather put me off for a while then a couple of weeks ago I replaced another of the valves - this time I had to cut the hose itself as the clips would not come off, but after putting the new valve in and re-sealing the hoses with cable ties, it worked. With the pressure now out of the system, the seals are fine.
