Windscreen Wiper Problems

I own a 1984 3.2 Carrera with 47k miles. However recently when I have been caught in poor weather on longer distances, the wipers come to a halt after approximately 30 minutes driving. My thoughts are that it is the motor assembly, as the linkage all looks in fine order. The wipers will operate again when turned back on after approximately another 30 minutes - possibly the motor cooling down?. I have removed the large motor assembly at the weekend and am considering replacing. Before I do this, I would like to know if any other owners have experienced this fault and rectified.

I would add that the car has travelled only only 6k miles in the last 3 years with myself and under 4k dry miles in 13 years with the previous owner.

I am looking forward to joining the PCGB Le Mans camping trip and therefore need to resolve asap.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Cheers

Jonathan

Greetings
Although I've not had the problem myself I don't think it's the motor overheating. Because if it was, it would mean its drawing more current than the electrics were designed for and pop a fuse. No more wipers.
But they work again after 30 mins[:)] therefore I suspect dirty contacts in a relay somewhere[] Do you hear a sort of "chattering" from behind the dash somewhere, just before they stop?
Another thing to look for is worn/dirty wiper contacts in the switch assembly itself on the steering column. Next time it happens just wiggle the wiper switch arm and see if it does anything. I had that problem and had to overhaul the complete switch assembly.
Hope this helps:ROFLMAO:

Just a thought, have you tried operating the wipers with the rotary intermitent switch instead? It may highlight if the column stalk is the culprit. Always worth pulling the relays in/out aswell as it can restore a decent electrical connection i have found. Also check the fuses have not corroded aswell. I had an electrical problem recently and can't put my finger on exactly fixed it in the end but disconnecting and reconnecting a few connectors/relays/fuses seemed to do the trick (eventually). Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback. I have been advised that after testing the motor, it has been found to be running very hot, although does not result in blowing a fuse. I am reasonably satisfied that the switch lever is fine, however I will now be checking out the fuses and relays before ordering the new motor. I have also now noticed that the rear wiper fails to switch off - could the front and rear wiper problems be linked? The investigations will continue with hopefully a result within the next week or so.

The intermittent switch is as pictured by Aldo.
This switch alters the speed/delay of the intermittent and unlike later porsche also turns them on. And the wiper stalk is simply wiper speeds 1,2 & 3.

However if you Auto Park isn't working I expect that the intermittent relay has/is failing, as when the wiper & intermittent is turned off they should park.

Adam.
(I believe the relay is located behind the dials etc accessible maybe by removing the clock or via the luggage compartment)

had a similar problem with my wipers, sovled by removing the steering wheel, removing and cleaning the column mounted switch (electrical contact cleaning spray)

Have the exact same problem with mine, just havent had the chance to look into it.I do know there is a relay just behind the clock.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Does anyone know if you can test the relay to see if it is faulty before accessing it from the luggage compartment?

I would try cleaning the column mounted switches with electrical contact cleaning spray first, as Calisa suggested, this is a common problem when they get dirty and worn.
You might also need to bend the contacts slightly to get a better contact.
