Windscreen

Evening fellers, I'am after your advice on replacing my windscreen, I think its the original and obviously a little pitted and a couple of chips but not bad for 21years old.

Cosmetically I have nearly replaced everything (I think) Should I replace it for the sake of it or leave alone untill really needed, anyone had any problems after having to have had a replacement?

Would appreciate any thoughts you may have.

Is it covered by your insurance ?? [;)]

I had mine replaced recently on the S2 would have cost me £470 if it hadnt been damaged.
Its surprising how clear a new windscreen is if you see what I mean, Wipers swish nicely across the screen too.

One thing you don't have to worry about is corrosion around the windscreen caused by poor fitting. Be very careful to supervise the guys if you choose to change it!

I had a local specialist supply and fit mine for about £650 after some pilchard cracked it with the bonnets edge [:)] I did have a bit of a fight with the insurers but got reimbursed in the end. From what I've heard it's best not to go with the larger chains for this work, I'd recommend speaking to your local Porsche specialist for a recommendation of someone local with experience on these cars.

If you was to have a big stone chip or crack like i did ...then all i had to do was call the insurance company, they arranged every thing, RAC done the work and i paid them my 50 notes ex...job done and it was done good.

If it is only minor damage, your insurance company may well arrange for it to be polished for free. Their rationale is that a polish is cheaper than a replacement, therefore it is better to encourage you to do this as it costs them less ...

Mine is scratched, and I keep on meaning to call the polishing people ...

I wasn't even asked how my screen had broken when I called my insurers. Mine genuinely was an accident (I couldn't do it on purpose, but that's just me), the bolts securing the bonnet had slipped on one side meaning it dug in as I opened it. I offered this information to them and they still said it was covered (even after I told them that I had done said bolts up). I did have some problems with Autoglass who were rather useless, but it all got sorted in the end when I took the business away from them and got a true specialist to sort it out.

It's not uncommon for people to crack the windscreen when fitting new bonnet struts - you only have to raise the bonnet a bit more to make fitting them easier and it will catch the corner nicely.

I'm obviously only mentioning this so you don't do it by mistake.

Haven't heard of polishing the screen before, I will have to look into that.
As an when I get my act together and arrange it, I'll let you know how it went!

This is absolutely true...... Sometime ago there were articles in PP regarding the dreadful damage and ongoing problems incurred when not fitting a proper Porsche windscreen to 944s. I had mine replaced by the OPC and had to pay them in full, but got a refund from my insurers less the excess.

I think I know what you mean, it seemed unusual to me that the bottom edge of the glass is exposed too but that's the way they are.

Or are you looking for something aftermarket?

There should be a plastic cover over the heater / wiper assembly in the centre of the scuttle area

Its as Wigeon says rather untidy i thought i had something missing , just getting ready to fire up the internet to purchase something from Porsche shop ! i better find somehting else to spend on then.. on another note i had some switch stickers come through from garage 9 they are fab .

Where abouts are you? There's a good firm my indie uses for supplying and fitting, but guess it's only relevant if you're fairly local.

As Peter says, it depends where you are.

For reference re price, my new windscreen was £260+VAT with internal aerial and top tint.

Mine was about twice that from memory when fitted (I did post the amount here somewhere, but cannot face trying to search for it as it's probably over a year ago). Apparently there are (at least) two makes and we paid a premium to get the better one (shame it got broken again so quickly afterwards...). Mine had the aerial but not the top tint, which seems much more tricky to get hold of. The tint version is the standard one most places keep in stock and could have been a reason why it was dearer, but on a white car I just don't like the look of the tint...

Just make sure the person fitting it has done a 944 before, it's very easy to get water leaks, no radio reception or to scratch the paint which will then start to rust.
