Windscreens & Autoglass

Hi - I know that the subject of windscreen replacement on 997s has been widely commented on on this forum, but I wanted to refresh the topic to say that Autoglass really are very good (despite strong reservations I had initially). I needed yet another windscreen on mine and was having horrendous issues with getting Aviva to agree to use Porsche OEM glass and then for someone other than Autoglass to fit it. Many, many lengthy calls with "managers" at their call centres as the insurance policy I had was direct and not through their broker network, concluded that I would only get £120 (less the £75 excess) contribution to using Porsche glass and someone the local OPC use to fit. I persisted on the basis that "Porsche will invalidate the warranty" and that in the long run it will save Aviva money by getting it done properly, but they wouldn't budge. Eventually, by avoiding the national call centre and talking to the Autoglass depot direct who were doing the work, I got agreement for Porsche glass but they wanted to fit it (with just a £75 excess payment). After using the same depot 3 years ago, who buggered up the whole job (misfitted, noisy and left off sat nav connection) and left me with a £700 bill to put right, I was sceptical to say the least.
However, couldn't have been more wrong as they have done a first class job - new trim, the lot. The technology with their new glue means the jobs done in <2 hours. What a difference a new screen makes without all that "peppering" of the glass too.
So there you go, great job Autoglass.

I've just had my OPC fit a new screen today, also through Porsche Insurance and Aviva. No problem at all other than having to pay the invoice and then claiming back from the insurers.

Just to be clear on the points I'm raising here:

1. My 997 is insured with Aviva direct, not one of the Porsche affiliated (i.e. Marsh) insurers.
2. I had Porsche OEM glass fitted.
3. I only had to pay the £75 excess. Nothing else.

I am aware of the interaction with OPCs if you use a Porsche affiliated insurance company (I use Marsh for my Cayenne), but in general they are more expensive. My post was to provide advice to members who use Aviva direct and highlight the fact that Autoglass do have the same option for OEM glass and with a good network of fitters (as OPCs only sub contract the work anyway).

It's interesting as the received wisdom is that they claim it's OEM glass, but it's not genuine Porsche. I'll have to see what markings my screen has. I've heard the Autoglass ones won't have Porsche, Audi or whatever markings.

A bit like discs with Porsche branding or same spec from Porsche's suppliers.

Most people think there is no point in paying high Porsche prices for discs so I presume windscreens the same.

I've had 2 new screens on Porsche and 1 on a Mercedes. I think SG supply most European manufacturers.

My local windscreen company who were recommended by OPC asked on each occasion whether I wanted to wait a couple of days to get OEM branded screen or to have same spec OEM supplier's branded screen fitted same /next day. If not in a hurry I wait but I have never had a prospective buyer study windscreen markings when looking at a car.

Autoglass definitely (so they said!) used OEM glass that was ordered from PUK. It was a big discussion on this point with them, as otherwise as ralphmusic also stated it was same day for non-OEM. To check this, does anyone know exactly what inscription/logo there would be on a Porsche screen as opposed to branded? Actually, I'll pop out and have a look and my new Cayenne and see whats on that.

My recently-replaced Boxster screen says 'Saint-Gobain Sekurit' and is quite likely identical to those supplied to the aftermarket.

Anyone had dealings with Privilege on this topic? I was referred to Autoglass who then say that if i want genuine Porsche i have to pay £425 plus my £75 excess. Also say I need to travel to their nearest depot which is 25 miles away and leave the car for 4 hours.
