Wing mirrors (and door card) quick questions

Hi, some simple quick questions -

1) Some ***** clipped my wing mirror at the weekend and its come loose but holding on. I presume there's a bolt that's been sheared or something ... on the inside of the wing mirror arm, what do we have that holds it onto the door frame? Is it a couple of simple bolts and nuts?

2) Reason I ask the above is I've not been able to get to see it as I'm having trouble (rather embarassingly) removing the door card. Now I've got all the screws off, all popped off around the edges, the speaker cover, the tray and arm rest ... the last bit where it seems stuck is on the door handle. Now I expected to see a screw on the door handle casing, as per instructions I found elsewhere, but no screw! I would assume then this casing pops out leaving the handle itself ... except its really frickin' tight and I've already cracked the plastic trying to carefully lever it off top and bottom :( So on these '84 models ... is there a 'right' way to pop this off and door card generally?

I got a long journey tomorrow evening so freaking out trying to get this and my overheating/dead-fan problem sorted in time :(

3) A general wing-mirror glass question that I've been intrigued about. Both my 944's and my mates one .... seems to have convex or magnified (for want of a better word) glass on the wing mirrors - never had this before on other cars, still getting used to this - makes lane changing a little more stressful what with cars appearing 'closer' than I'm used to but especially on the N/S having blind spots when changing lanes to the left! Annoying having to adjust the mirrors down just to reverse park in the lines and all that. Is this the standard on all 944's? Has anyone changed the glass to normal or would that be a bad idea with worse blind spots? Just interested :) Maybe you're all used to it by now heh!

Does an '84/'85 mean that it's a square dash model? (Sorry for the daft question, my brain's not working well today.)

On an oval-dash car, there's a screw behind the door handle "¦ pull the handle all the way forward and poke a screwdriver behind it.

Clark's Garage has the guide for door panel removal on a later car.

I'd seen the Clarks Garage article (always the first port of call that website!) but as I said, there's no screw on the inner door handle [&o] -

I was expecting a screw to undo from lifting the actual handle. You can't tell on the pic but the plastic has cracked in several places from me assuming this can be levered off. [:eek:]
 
Can't tell from the PET illustration, but my memory of my 924 is that in the recess behind the handle there was a small square cover to prise out that covers the screw head? Could be mixing it up with another car.

This happened to me recently. when I took the card off there were two lugs and a threaded bolt. One lug had been sheared off and there was no nut on the bolt. Couldn't find the nut in the bottom of the door so dont know if it ever had one. I put a nut on in and it seems reasonably secure, although really I need a new base to the mirror.


cant remember the door card too well, once all the screws were out it just took a bit of jiggling.
 
Re door card, my (oval dash) has a screw behind the door handle, I am aware of this as the lock has stopped working twice in the two months I've had the car.

Re wing mirror magnification, I concur that it takes a bit of getting used to.

I have therefore been of no use to your problems, sorry.

Done it now - what you have to do on these square dash models is making a kind of 'hook', pull open the handle fully and then fiddle the hook into the exposed gap and into the middle of the casing - eventually you'll get it and it'll spring out. DO NOT TRY AND LEVER IT OUT LIKE I DID! The window switches do lever out, so I figured the handle casing must too - big mistake! 'Hello superglue'!

Wing mirror repairs - yea there was two pillars inside the wing mirror that 'was' holding it on that had snapped - weren't even proper bolts. Looks like someone's done a bodge repair job on it before. Instead of getting a whole new mirror we drilled two holes and secured it nicely with some proper bolts. It sits a little higher up now which exposes different coloured paint and some scratches so I'll need to touch that up, no biggie.
