Winter engine Care

Guest

New member
I don't want to take the car out onto the salty roads, what's best for my engine.

The car's likley to be stood for a month or so.

Should I disconnect the battery and leave it alone, let it idle every week to reach normal operating temperature, or sit and rev it to speed up this process?

Thanks in anticipation of any help

A month is nothing.

I'd garage it dry, disconnect the battery or connect a conditioner and wouldn't bother starting it over such a short period. I might move it slightly to avoid flat-spotting the tyres.

I'm in total agreement with Oliver, worst thing you can do to an engine is idle it from a cold start which keeps the fuel mixture rich for longer periods and effectively acts as an upper cylinder wash thus removing the lubricating oil film and ultimately premature bore wear and a smokey engine!

See my thread on 'Repressurise Oil System'.

I too would avoid killer cold starts. Unless you are taking it out for a good long run, best not to fire up just to top up the battery which will also be drained by the effort of cold cranking.

Erm... am I the only one intending to drive mine every day throughout the winter.... will I see another 3.2 on the roads in my neck of the woods??

Well, if they are, then mine's going to melt and stick to the road - in which case, please drive around it and not over it! [:D]
