Winter Lay Up

Hi All. A buddy of mine who lives in the South of Germany near the Swiss border has just put his 997 c4s in the garage for the winter. Its already snowing there and he has a Cayenne so no need for the 911 for 5-6 months.
The question---Is it good to start the car every week or not to start at all. I get the advice about tyres and battery etc, its just whether to start and run to warm up the engine or not. I have read some stuff about the oil pump not picking up the oil from the sump in enough quantity to lubricate properly.

Your wise advice is sought. [8|]

I would have thought the short starts would have created more condensation/ sludge against not starting.

I think if you are going to run it should be more than just a couple of minutes. The water and oil should get up to operating temperature (80C for both) and also it should be moved back and forth to unstick the brake pads (of course the handbrake is left off). Also a good idea I believe to rotate the wheels a bit so that it's not sitting on the same bit of rubber all winter. I have also read that it's a good idea to leave the fuel tank full to miminise condensation and thus getting water in the fuel system.
Mine doesn't get a lot of use through the winter because the lanes around here up to the main roads are knee deep in mud from the farm vehicles but if it's not used for more than a couple of weeks I usually at least get it out of the garage and do the above (also run the a/c if it's not too cold outside). Whether that's a good thing or not I don't know!! Will check with someone who might..........[;)]

I also put a bit more pressure in the tyres because of lower temperatures and it makes them more resistant to gaining "memory" flatter spots where they were in contact with the ground.

This from my Porsche Centre

" it is a very good idea to start the engine and run up to operating temperature at least once a week. Also good idea to over inflate tyre pressure up to max load."
