Winter prep

Im taking advantage of these sunny days to do some prep for the winter, generally eeking out problems here and there, getting rid of any possible rust underneath, treating in the sills etc and ensuring seals etc, my main worries of damp have come from, holding water below the battery and with the tools, (in the boot), i think this stems from blocked spoiler canals, and recently in the rear passenger footwell, where i found a rubber bung was failing to keep water out giving a damp carpet, glad i found these seals as i hate those morning spending more time drying the inside of the windows than out!!!!! So hope this info is useful to others, these just seem like a strange place to have holes in the floor, there is one on each side of the car.
Is there any specific routines you guys go through before the cold season kicks in that would be beneficial to us relative newbies?
 
pull out the vent on the door surround behind the door (the door shut) and have a look inside the rear quarter with a decent torch. Then also get the torch under the car in front of the rear wheels and shine into the drain hole at the bottom of the rear quarter.

I did this yesterday and found I didn't larup in enough Waxoyl last year because I have a little bit of surface corrosion on one side at the bottom of one of the quarters on the chassis rail panel thing totally solid from the outside however which is why you need to get at the inside of the panels since external inspection tends to show no problems until it is too late.

Also get under the car and check for any cuts in the underseal, and pull of the vents on the doors and shine a torch inside the door to look for corrosion or dirt inside the door. On mine I noticed the door bottom panels are perfect but I have a tiny amount of surface rust on one caused by excessive build up of grime on the inside of the door panel i.e. it has run off the window past the window seal.

IMHO ppl worry far to much about visible surface rusting in obvious places, such as the bottom of the wheel arches which are not that important really but forget that these cars rust inside out in the doors, cills and rear quarters or heaven forbid if you get rust in the chassis floor caused by cuts in the underseal then the car could quickly go beyond economic repair. Some 944's have ended up being broken for parts after getting rot in the major chassis legs / floor pan.

Early cars without wheel arch liners may also suffer in the same way as early 911's with rot in that area but I don't know much about that because my S2 has wheel arch liners, shame they didn't shore up the rest of the chassis with decent plastic protection.

You are aware that there are drainage holes in the rear wings below the battery/tools etc to let the water drain out
 
yeah im aware of those but on the near side there is a drain pipe going through it any not letting water out so it needed attention. cheers tho,
thanks for the heads up for looking down inside the sills from the arch, i onyl thought there was access from the door aperture. mmm waxoyl, the stuff i love to hate.
Just been cleaning the inner arches today,v pleased with the condition of original protection, just the fuel tank straps and a few pipes look untidy.
A godsend compared to what my beelte once looked.
