Winter starting

Ashamed to say I haven't started car for 7 weeks - work away/ bad weather /salt etc.

You begin to worry at that stage if it is going to play games even though I have it on an Airflow battery conditioner.

Exploded in to life first time - hunted a bit - oil gurgled - settled down to its usual grumbling idle - so situation absolutely normal!!!!!

How many other "supercars " would do that?

Hmmm. My beastie has disgraced itself. Spent the last 3 months "resting" with umbilical cord attached. Went to start this morning and - the dreaded click and litup dash. Now being charged to see whether the 4 year old battery is duff.

Mine regularly gets left for several weeks, without a charger and always starts first turn.
I usually do a 24 hr charge once a winter though.

My car sat for just under 2 weeks in Jan without being used and without a trickle charger. The started motor turned over fine and the car started first time. There was a bit of blue smoke though.

I normally leave my airflow trickle charger permanently attached when not being used for more than a few days.

Yep. Battery will not hold a charge, so it will be replaced. It probably died more from lack of use than from age.

Hi Pete,

No - I found a source of 17" Cup 2s and was about to buy them when GF said "When have you got time to faff around changing wheels just because the sun's come out" (or words to that effect) - so I'm still thinking about it.

Must admit it would be tough to know on what date to change them twice a year and I'm currently having no real problem (except in extreems) using my summer Mich PS2s through this bad winter.

Depending on what time of year I need to buy them, I might make my next set of new tyres a Winter set and see how much better they are in cold conditions.

I put mine on in Oct / Nov (SEAT Alhambra, not the Porsche yet) and take them off approx March

They are designed to work below 7 deg C, but are still effective above that - I actually find the main benefit is on wet roads, as they have much better grip and water clearing ability (Michelin Alpin's)

They have been fantastic in the snowy weather we have had down here - I live on the side of a hill, and the road outside my house is never gritted, so they have been invaluable. Had a surprise 2" snow last week, and my wife was able to drive safely up a steep hill into the village when another road was blocked by stuck traffic - she was the only car that made it up that hill all night

She was speaking to a German colleague, and he said that "All Weather" tyres were coming into vogue in Europe, as they satisfied the winter tyre regs there and you could keep them on all year - not sure if this type of tyre would be suitable/available for a Porsche though
