Winter Tyre Run for R2? '“ Challenge for the summit!

Hi Phil here, new member and Boxster owner.

I was wondering how many people in Aberdeenshire use their Porsche in winter and have winter tyres fitted? I tried my Boxster on the summer tyres in the snow and it was less than terrible, getting stuck in 1" of snow on my flat driveway! I have just purchased a set of Porsche Winter Tyres and alloys from fleabay with just 300 miles on them for just over half new price, and reading articles people say a 2WD with winter tyres is better in snow than a 4WD with summer tyres....I want to find out.

After reading the article in this month's Evo about taking a £396k Aston Martin Zagato up the old military road, I am inspired to do the similar. Would anyone else be up for it "" doesn't even have to be this year we could plan it in for next year, if enough interest....

I was thinking along the lines of meet up on Leggart Terrace, out the South Deeside to Ballater to regroup and then decide from there whether it's

1. Turnaround if weather is too bad
2. If Marginal, up to Glenshee for coffee
3. If possible head over to the Lecht for a coffee

Obviously safety would be a concern, I don't propose to go on a day when we just cause chaos for no reason "" this could only be decided a few days beforehand, hopefully we would just be dealing with wet or slightly snowy roads near the high points

Speed "" I have a young son who will love to come along, but winter tyres or not, I won't be hammering along, so if enough people, try to keep to a main group then let the odd few tear on ahead, as long as we agree to meet at certain points and folk don't waiting this shouldn't be an inconvenience.

Tyres "" I wouldn't suggest specifying winter tyres, I know a 4S will easily achieve a lot even on a snowy road.

Anyone consider the idea or perhaps it's been done recently? If any interest I'll discuss it with Steve R

I'd be up for that as would my son in his boxster I would suspect. But it would need to be next year as the winter tyres are off now tha the temp is over 7 degrees (at least for the most part). I wouldn' t say that a C4 (S or otherwise) would be okay on summer tyres, my 993 C4 certainly struggles on summer tyres in the snow but is phenominal on winters.

Interesting idea, I might be up for that if the dates work out. I have my Cayman on N rated winter Conti's at the moment, although I have not really had occasion to test them in really bad conditions. I do know however that I run our two daily drivers (Audi A1 and A2) on Semperit winters, and the difference is night and day in snow.

I'm in Brussels just now and have just found out about the white out in Central Scotland - hence my nonsensical previous post about having my summer tyres back on. Hopefully it will all be gone when I get back.

Good morning ,
Hopefully later this year my wife and I will move back to the glorius North as all our Missionery work is completed south of the border,
we hope to be moving back to the east coast area again , is there a monthly meet for the Scottish contingent and who do I need to inform etc etc
look forward to seeing you all on a few runs , pending house sale [8|]

Morning Hamish

Contact Steve Rose (RO r2) for the Aberdeen area and/or Gill Gardiner (ARO r2) if you are going to be further south (Dundee area). Contact details in PorscheFile.

You'll be made most welcome.

Having just this morning driven over to Eastern-Western's paint shop on summer tyres, I'm definitely going to re-think my decision not to get winter tyres for next year! Then YES - I'm up for a Winter run over Glenshee. Perhaps we can persuade a couple of Cayenne owners to come along with some rope[;)]

My new winters turned up yesterday and WHAT A DIFFERENCE even on just cold damp roads... less wheel spin and better turn in

I also emailed Steve R, who is definately up for incorporating into the 2014 calender.

Please keep replying if you're interested as allows Steve to guage the interest. I am thinking end Feb / start of March???

Cayenne's - Wont we be towing them out? [:)] (PS My other car is Discovery!)

Here is some feedback, for those still swithering whether to "˜waste' the money on winter tyres.

As I said above, I have just purchased and fitted my winter wheels two days ago for the snow, I can honestly say they transform the car (2005 Boxster 2.7). I never trust reviews where the person says; these tyres I have just spent a wedge on are awesome, mainly because they are trying to convince themselves! However the car has been stuck during the last snow on my flat driveway on the summer tyres, today (after fitting the Porsche OEM alloys and continental TS tyres) I was stopping on purpose on snowy hills and pulling cleanly away, the more confident I got, the more I wanted to see what would stop them, but basically I never managed in the 2-3" of snow that was around in Aberdeenshire. I finally ended up in a slippery snow covered carpark on a slope, I stopped on the slope facing upwards in fresh snow and pulled away with the traction control kicking in a little, what a transformation. Even on damp roads the turn in is sharper and the braking distance drastically reduced, the car feels really planted.

I think if I had just borrowed the "˜winters', I would have purchased a set after these few days experience, because I can drive faster and stop quicker (than my on summer tyres) and feel safer.

At this point you're probably thinking, this is some muppet that can't drive for toffees and just floors it when the wheels start spinning. Well I am a muppet, but I do have 20 years off roading experience taking part in some national competitions, so hopefully I learned a little during that time. :)

Don't overlook the OPC's in Aberdeen and Edinburgh, both of which have excellent reputations. I am a long standing customer of Porsche Edinburgh and rate them very highly, dealer of the year last year as I recall.

Many thanks for the info on Porsche edinburgh , I will certainly keep it in mind but have a couple of years yet to think about changing, good for a service too but I guess I will be closer to Aberdeen when we do move back, Miss all the good roads in Scotland ,Glencoe, Lochness , Blairgowrie Braemar,
nothing down south compares with them all , apart from less speed camera's from Ashford to Dundee the first normal camera is near Gleneagles , so I will better keep a look out when back
cheers

Fixed cameras are not much of an issue around here, but camera vans certainly are. Keep your eyes peeled []

All

I wanted resurrect this thread.

I would like to judge interest for a winter tyre run, probably around Sunday 19th Jan (TBC), same format as above. It would be good to make this trip more accessible for the Tayside members but I'm not sure how, unless 2 groups headed out (Perth and Aberdeen) and met at Glenshee???

Let me know what you think

Phil
