Winter tyres for continental trip

Hey folks,

I'm considering a trip to continental Europe and was looking for suggestions/advice with regards to winter tyres. I believe it is a legal requirement so I guess that is a must. To be honest I don't think I'd be comfortable driving on deep snow with Summer tyres, so my questions are:

- Do I need a full set of wheels and tyres? I was considering just buying a new set of tyres and use my set of wheels. Any issues/downside with it?
- In case I need to get a full set, anything in particular I should be aware of?
- I'm also considering getting a used set. Good idea or no?
- Lastly, any particular brand(s)/type(s) of tyres?

Thank you in advance

No, as long you match the required specs pp the vehicle`s manual

The manual will advise, probably noting a reduction in wheel diameter
Smaller wheels will provide tyres with a taller aspect ratio / profile which is an advantage

Yes, but check carefully for correct sizing, fitment and condition - tread depth
Try Simon at 9-Apart-Ltd | eBay Stores / 9 Apart Ltd | Genuine Porsche Parts New & Used | England

We have used Nokian to good effect (VW Touareg)

I don't know what model you have but If you check out ebay you will probably find a set of wheels and tyres for your vehicle, being a legal requirement in winter in most of Germany plus Austria etc most people have a winter set of wheels so when they sell the car they sell the winter set either direct or to a third party company that specialises in buying them up and selling them on there.
I've bought a couple of sets from Germany for bmw's on eBay, make sure you read the description properly and only get the sizes and spec porsche list for your model and you want ones with at least 5-6 mm of tread, officially you should replace winters at about 4mm, also check to make sure that they are fitted with the correct pressure sensor s
Having said that one set I bought came from a guy in the North of England who had bought a new set of tyres before winter but then sold the car before having them fitted so I got a pallet delivered with a genuine set of bmw alloys with his old winter tyres still on plus a brand new set as well all pirelli scorpion which are great, I've also had Goodyear winter tyres before,.
As previous poster said winter sets are often one step down in diameter and narrower than standard and maybe same size front and rear but you can get ulp winters

Downside of using one set of wheels is the wear and damage risk of constantly refitting tyres and removing them. most using winter tyres own complete summer and winter wheel and tyre sets

Macan 18 and 19 wheel sets are narrower (and cheaper) than 20 and 21 wheel sets and that helps bad weather performance both for snow a, ice and aquaplaning

- I'm also considering getting a used set. Good idea or no?
Just ensure adequate tread depth remaining, the recommended replacement depth for winter tyres is 4mm cf 3mm for summer

- Lastly, any particular brand(s)/type(s) of tyres?

Remember Porsche N status if Macan still under warranty. I have had good experience with Continental and Dunlop winter snowflake approved tyres

Just one point that's not been mentioned already, dealers get a bit sniffy about about tyres over 6 years of age and with relatively little use winters can easily attain that.

Hi! I saw your post re snow tyres. I have a set of wheels and part worn snow tyres for sale. (I have sold the Macan). All in very good shape, no scratches and plenty of tread. Can send photos etc. ssamps@gmail.com
