Winter tyres stopped factory collection

I wont now be able to collect my 981 on order unless I want to pay for two sets of tyres.
part of my purchase deal is to collect the car from the factory, but from 1/10/2012 (think this is the date they said) it's law that all cars leaving Porsche to have winter tyres being driven on Germans roads, obviousy don't want to pay twice, so letting the car come the normal way , the OPR have agreed to either let me collect one of thier cars or to pay for a factory visit, so not too bothered but would have been special. Anyone else came across this ?

This is the law in Germany, it's not specific to Porsche. Thats why they can drive their rear wheel drive cars all year round in snow and all weathers safely. Germany roads don't grind to halt when there is a inch of snow like England. I live in Scotland and use winter tyres and they make an incredible difference

I read recently that the actual law in Germany is that tyres must be as appropriate to the weather conditions which in Germany means that since they expect their first snow and temps can be below 7C in October that is why they change to winter tyres then, not that it is law to have them but if you haven't and it causes you to become stuck, disrupt traffic etc or have an accident then you're in deep s***. But there is no set date.

Austria is from 1st November to 15th April.

In the case of factory collection it's probably a set date due to Porsche Safety advice. But can't they just let you collect on the winter tyres and then buy summer tyres at the dealership in the spring?

I agree with the law we should do the same in the UK. I don't want to pay for two sets of tyres to be honest as I would not use it in the snow or ice. Just of course started the thread to warn others .

Will regulations never stop coming?. Is there anything in life that is not controlled, protected, risk assessed, monitored, recorded, prohibited?

We may as well rush the introduction of the Matrix to life and let it all become a memory whilst we live safely in a sack of goo.

Use of 'ordinary' tyres in Germany and Switzerland after a certain date invalidates insurance!

Interesting post and not one I was aware of.however I personally like to drive the Porsche all yr round so last yr bought a new winter set of wheels and tyres .made a big difference even in not so bad conditions so would definitely get 2 sets with a new order. Out of interest how are they suggesting you drive back with the summer wheels and tyres? !!! With a trailer[:D]

They very kindly said I could either bring one of their demo cars back or I could just go with the PCGB which they would pay for either way, very nice of them.

I really can't justify after spending 67K on a new car spending even more on a whole set of winter wheels, even though I agree with the comments....my wife would only say "how much, we could have another holiday with that money"

Have to say quite excited I IMO think the new 981 is the best looking Porsche bar the 918 ever!

Ummmmmm ..... can't Porsche give you a loaner set of wheels with the appropriate tyres, for the journey ...... might be in the interest of good customer service. They can ship your wheels with the batch of other cars for your dealer (term batch used very loosely) [;)]

It's not as if they are selling the car at a loss. [:)]

Must admit I always struggle with the being made to pay for a factory collection, when it probably increases the margin .... but heyho .... I may just be a little too cynical [&:]

I collected my GT3 on 9 Nov 2007 from the factory. It came on Pirelli Corsa's ( like Mich Cups ) and the drive back home in very wet conditions was worrying. I also did a lap of the Ring and there was bits of snow/ slush on the ground. I would have liked a better all round tyre. So this new rule is not at all as harsh as it would seem, it's for our own good.
Re the GT3 and Winter tyres, the advised winter tyres for my car per the 2008 Owners Manual are narrower and fitted to narrower wheels than the Summer ones, so it's not an option just to swap tyres in this case.
