Winter Tyres The Sequel

Talking around in Europe after getting confirmation of the despatch of my Scorpions
friends tell me that when they order a new car the dealer in some cases (BMW/ Audi) supply
a free set of steel winter rims otherwise they order another set themselves .I have ordered :-
255/55/18 V rated which is the same tyre size as my summer rubber.
(spare set Pch Rims Cayenne S )
However friends tell me that their steel winter rims take smaller size tyres than the normal .
Tony M ordered his gear from an OPC what size did they supply please Tony?
Have other forum members ordered via an OPC ?
Do our OPC's know what they are doing when it comes to winter tyres?
Stick with your "winters" drivers! Heaviest Snow for 90 Years in NY yesterday....

I used my OPC as I ordered a set of 20" Techno Sport wheels with winter tyres (it is a Tequipment item) for my GTS. The standard GTS wheels are 21" but Porsche do not yet supply 21" winter tyres for Cayennes. They have been great in the snow and ice this winter - driving performance and braking has been improved significantly. There were a few times during the last snow when I was able to ease past others in "competitor 4x4s" who were going nowhere.

As for the question was the OPC knowledgeable - my experience was no. I did my own homework and told them what I wanted. It was only when I gave them the Tequipment part number that they realised I could have 20" rims with winters. Up until then they tried to sell me something else.

Convincing article in latest Evo magazine. For the time being I am running the (summer) tyres of Michelin on the front and Pirelli on the rear. In the recent snows Cayenne still seemed to outperform anything else on the road. (Before you all tell me off I do intend changing the fronts soon).

Just another point .When i was trolling thru the Tyre websites i noticed that
Run Flats were available in my size. I am RIGHT in thinking they would
NOT FIT my standard Porsche 18 inch rims ? ?

Hi Kevin,

The Winter wheels are 18" .

My GTS has Factory fitted 21" wheels with low profile tyres so the 18" with 'High' profile Scorpions don't look too bad !

The OPC's spares man was really helpfull although at the time of ordering he was unable to say which Brand of tyres would be fitted to the rims.
I was pleasantly surprised to find out they were the Scorpion Snow and Ice tyres, when they arrived. Note you can buy Scorpion tyres in the UK but unless it says 'Snow and Ice' on the sidewall, then they are not winter tyres.

The price was somewhat negotiable and since I bought 2 sets, I got a hefty discount.

The winter tyres are still not so good in thick mud though. On Saturday I had a period which I will describe as temporary loss of traction. Eventually after sliding sideways I managed to reverse back and find a less muddy route and with 'Diff lock' on, the KN managed to haul itself up the hill.

Mine say M&S but think that may mean Mud and Snow rather than the eponymous retail store. They're Dunlops and came with 18" rims from a French lady selling her Gen1 KN and the rims plus tyres were £600 on ebay. They've done two winters now, made all the difference to driving around in this weather, and still have plenty of tread.
Just a shame I didn't buy the Techquipment chains at the same time.

Hi, all of the OPC'S have access to a full list of winter tyres on the technical information system, also some registered indie's have it as well.
Chris

Well all will be revealed later this week .I bought them here in Switzerland but even then they were not a stock item and have been shipped from Germany .Surely as i ordered Ice and Snow thats is what i will get ? If they have the M & S label
I guess i should reject which may be difficult as i paid for them ! [8|]

Glad you sorted out the tyres.Porsche have on their list DunlopSP Winter Sport3D (17inch only),Pirelli Scorpion Ice&Snow(17-20inch),Michelin Latitude AlpinHP(18 inch only) and Dunlop Grandtrek WTM3.(19 inch only).

Thanks Chris,
Still cant finf out the answer as to whether I can fit runflats in future if need.
The tyre agents wont commit themselves and local OPC needed Chassis no etc
so it would seem some Cayenne wheels will take runflats.I get a bit worried
on a motorway having no spare and only a tub of Glue...............
