Winter tyres; worth it or not?

Are winter tyres worth it? without a doubt if it's your main transport, however if a second car then maybe not quite so much... as you can pick the days
Anything below 7degree and you're better off on winter tyres.

Loads of stuff about this on the 2 MB forums I also frequent - as MB's (the rear wheel drive variety) tend to be useless in snow. All say winter tyres make an incredible difference - like being able to move instead of being stuck! MB are doing a "winter wheels and tyres" promotion this year, so I've just ordered 4 x 16" alloys with Dunlop snow tyres - identical size to the front wheels of my 968! - for £800 fitted - and they'll store my summer tyres for the winter as well! After the fun I had last year with the C270, I'm convinced it's worthwhile.

I have an eclass estate as well as the 911, and was wondering where you got the alloys and tyres from - an MB dealer? looks a great price

thanks

The promotion is supposed to be nationwide by MB, so it's your local MB main dealer you need to talk to. Some folk have reported "my dealer claims to know nothing about it!", but Ashford (where I've ordered mine), Milton Keynes and Bedford certainly do. Bigger wheels are more expensive - 1 poster was quoted £1400 for a set of 17's for a W212 E350cdi, so it's worth checking if you can fit 16's for the winter!

I bought a set of 16" steel rims + winter tyres for our BMW and it did make a huge difference. However, I would never personally leave my summer wheels and tyres in BMW's hands. Stored them in my garage instead. It's worth shopping around main dealers as I got mine over £100 cheaper from a BMW dealer in Kent rather than my local dealership. They couriered for free also.

I started using winter tyres a few years ago and the difference is marked. I will not have any of my family drive without them between November and March as there is no need to take the risk. The important thing people do not rank highly enough is that these are not just for snow conditions.

What I find facinating is that there is little mention that the cost of having winter tyres is effectively neglible. Provided that you buy the tyres outside of the crazy season when there is snow on the ground and there is limited supply versus demand, then there is barely a difference to the cost of summer tyres. When you are on your winter tyres then you are not wearing out your summer tyres, therefore broadly you spread the mileage across 2 sets of tyres instead of wearing out one and then moving on to the next.

Therefore with 1 set of rims, your only real additional cost per year is having the tyres changed over - my local etyres guy comes out on the weekend and does this for £50, so that is £100 extra cost per annum. So for the cost of a tank of petrol, a car can be on the right tyre for the conditions all year round.

Having said that, I have just bought a Boxster and negotiated a good deal on a full extra set so I'll now change my own wheels.

It is a negligible cost no brainer for me.

Thanks for the info, guys.

OPC said winter tyres ".....may be in short supply.....will be £1200 for a set...".

However, they can supply if I buy a set of wheels as well - cost for the lot £2400. Which is a lot extra for a set of wheels I don't need or want.

I'm mulling it over; wheels/tyres can be carried over to next 991 but i still feel they are being a bit naughty.

2400 doesn't seem too much if spread over say 3 yrs as you are only using the tyres half the years they effectively each last twice as long - that's why I rationalised it anyway!!

Just get the tyres online(ie try event tyres, mytryes, camskill), then you dont need to purchase extra set of wheels , and save a few bob and the tyres will be cheaper than OPC...oh Event tyres come to you to fit them as well :)
