Winter tyres

Has anyone got any personal recommendations for winter/snow tyres?
I have a 1990 C4 and will be using it daily over the winter period (I strongly believe that cars were built to be used and that lack of use causes/promotes mechanical failures). The tyres will be going on a set of design 90 wheels I have just purchased.
Having had some unpleasant experiences (at high and low speeds) in the snow with All season and High performance tyres on other vehicles (fwd,rwd and 4wd) I think the expense is justified for the few weeks that there is actually snow on the ground.

Hi,

I've got a set of Michelin Alpins (I think) on my people carrier - brilliant in the snow, and on wet and slippery roads

Not sure what would be the best for a Porsche, there will be N rated ones available

Thanks I have read John's website and Adrian's book. I was just looking for some personal feedback from people that may have used different makes of winter tyres.
