Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow winter tyres have been recommended to me for the "S"
with standard wheels.Any comments or other recommendations?

The September 04 Technical Service Bulletin issued by PCNA shows these as the approved Winter Tyres for 18 inch wheels:
235/60 R 18 107 H M+S
Dunlop Grandtrek WT M2 N0
Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow N0
255/55 R 18 109 V M+S
Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow N0
In both cases, there is a note: Not for Cayenne Turbo w/Increased Performance.
There are also approvals for All Terrain, and All Season. HTH.

I have just had the Hankook Ventus RH06 255/55 R18 which are 109Y put on the wife's Touareg after the Mytouareg forum having great reviews about handling, rain/snow ability and 30K life. The tread pattern makes my Cayenne Pirelli Rossos (I know they shouldn't be compared) look puny. Cost £89 each on Mytyres if you only want them for the winter look at them (sorry they don't carry the N badge, that'll cost you another £100@).
Further to that I put Kuhmo ecsta on my 944 another basement low price brand and couldn't fault the winter ability last year.

Thanks for the comments.

I searched the Michelin site and found that they offer a 255/55 18N0 in their Latitude Alpin series. Tried my local Porsche centre, they could only offer Pirelli Ice & Snow at £230 each.

Went to ATS Euromaster, they were v. helpful. Rang Michelin only to find that they have no tyres available even in their European distibution centre, so settled on the Pirellis at £175 less 15% inc valves, balancing and VAT. They'd quoted £170 for the Michelin's, even before finding that they couldn't get them.

Hi Mike

Glad you got some tyres sorted in the end - we have the Alpins on our non - Porsche, and they worked really well, hope the Pirellis work out - going somewhere nice in the winter [;)]

Hi Pete,

Did you not get my mail? I'll resend it. I think we're both going to same place over Xmas.

Best rgds

Hi Mark,

I bought a set of 18" alloys earlier this year, which came with a brand new set of Michelin Alpins. I think I'll be putting mine on for the first time towards the end of November as the 20" Hankook Ventus ST Im running also have the winter snowflake symbol and are (for me) a awesome tyre and unbelievably quiet!

Cheers
FP

Have been using winters on the previous Cayenne for the last few years. Main problem is availability of new tyres, may be better this year of course. Mine go on about now and off when temperatures start to climb in the Spring. Using Michelin Alpins too.

Hi I also bought a set of 19" Cayenne wheels on ebay and fitted a set of Vredestein wintrac 4s, these had been on my Range Rover Sport the previous winter and about to fit them this weekend to look after my 21" spotless wheels as they have started gritting already. So this will be the third winter on the vredesteins and I found them superb on both the RRS and the Cayenne last winter, tyre wear has been minimal and I think I've covered about 20,000 miles thus far and the tread has another 20K at least. my wife had Hankook ventus all season on her Touareg for 4 years (2 sets 60,000 miles) they were fitted all year and were great in the snow some of which was 9" deep. I did encounter an OPC who questioned my wheels and tyres with Porsche when it went in on warranty work but I had already quized the sister OPC on the wheel and tyre size and rating and had it in writing/email to prove I had followed Porsche criteria be it £1200 cheaper.

Bring on the snow

I have a set in the for sale sections fitted with the acknowledged BEST winter tyres
ie European Spec Ice and snow scorpions

My Mrs drove on it...sidewalls are ruinated[&o]
These tyres seem hard to come by aswell it would seem.....

I have a confession to make,in all this snow,in my Cayenne equipped with winter rubber...I felt smug it was so easy to get around.
There,I've said it,and I am sorry[:)]

I have a set of 20" for my 2013 GTS with Dunlops (as supplied new by Porsche as a winter wheel and tyre set). My summer wheels are 21". Go with the same size as your summer wheels or slightly smaller. I think they make a big positive difference. K

Thnx I was thinking the 18" with Dunlops from Porsche at c£1700 would do the job, summer ones are 21"

I have 22" summer wheels, so I bought a second had set of 19" alloys which I have put some vredestein wintrac tyres on. Very happy with them and feel much more confident using them in the slush / snow.

Rim size - i have driven the cayenne diesel with 18, 20 & 21" wheels. The bigger wheels look cool but understeer and give a hard ride. i chose 18" and you really have to push to get understeer. comfort is hugely better. For winter you are better with the HIGHEST profile as there will be potholes full of water that you cant see. My OPC at Silverstone tell me its not uncommon to have broken springs from the terrible roads.

next tyres - i use the Michelin Latitude Alpin winters which reviews say are best in snow. Haven't tried them in snow yet but mine does go off road into woodland with steep 1 in 3 slopes, diagonal slopes and plenty of mud. The Michelins beat my Freelander 2 on Vredestein Wintrac 4Xtremes. i trust this helps.
