Wiper Linkage

Greetings all

I'm having wiper linkage popping off issues. I purchased a new linkage arm, driver side, about 2 years ago and had no dramas for 2 years. It has now popped off again twice in recent weeks. The frame is NLA which I thought would solve my problem.

Should I purchase another new linkage arm, only £7 from OPC, and see how that goes, or is there a better solution. It may well be the ball on the frame itself has slightly reduced in size over the years.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Stuart

Please explain the method if you'd be so kind, it doesn't seem to be in the technical articles! Cheers Stuart

Search Renn list for a full explanation But it seems you drill though the arm and the ball pin ,add a small washer one end and a larger one at the other then bend the split pin open Never tried it, but there seem to be a few threads about other people doing it.....seems like it's would work I'll post the thread if I can find it again

Thanks Ken. Sounds like a plan. Would involve removing the linkage completely in order to drill the hole I would assume? I'll see how a new £7 arm performs I think and have the split pin method as plan b. Funny thing is the wipers are fine when it's not raining![8D] Stuart

I had same issue with mine, plastic cup had worn on mine. I distorted the cup enough to make it a tight fit again, and it had been fine for a while, but popped off again the other day. Split pin mod is an option, or I remember seeing some clips a while ago that would work....... here... http://www.amazon.co.uk/WINDSCREEN-WIPER-MOTOR-LINKAGE-REPAIR/dp/B007BADIP6 Might try one of those.

Looks good thanks for posting

I don't think they would work looking at the arrangement in the illustration compared to the cup and ball arrangement on our cars? Stuart

It lists 944 on his site. For 14mm it says the clip will work, for 16mm it says to use the plate. I will measure the ball tomorrow. http://www.askthemechanic.co.uk/wipers/index.html

I received the clip yesterday, I was short for time but in my case it doesn't fit out of the box. It needed to be bent a bit to even get it over the socket part of the linkage as there is a large bump on the back of the linkage arm that the clip has to clear, but even then, the other part of the clip won't fit over the ball. I haven't measured it, but hopefully there is enough meat on the clip to file it out, then it will fit. So maybe the larger repair clip/plate will fit first time, but this one should work with a bit of filing and bending. Will report back tomorrow!

Well, I had another look yesterday. It seems that the clip is designed for a ball joint with small diameter (the part between ball and link arm) of around 9.5mm, but mine had a diameter of 11.5mm. So I filed the clip out a touch, and it now fits OK. Due to having to bend it open a bit to get it over the hump on underside of the linkage, it doesn't quite clip over as it should at the back of the linkage, but it doesn't seem like it will come out. I tried pulling the linkage apart and it seems secure. Possible that the larger repair clip he sells would work out of the box, but not 100% without trying it.
