Wiper mechanism

Anybody ever changed their wiper mech? Mine broke the other day (thank heaven for Rain Wizard) and obviously it was too much to expect when I thought I'd just replace the broken part.

So on the advice of my OPC I bough a replacement mechanism, but can I fit it? Can I f[]ck!

I can undo everything holding the old mech in, but getting it out if it's space is a bigger job than I can manage. Two hours of puling, twisting ect. and no progress, so for now I've put it all back together. If I can't sort it by Monday, I'll be phoning La Rose, and leaving them my flexible friend.

If anyone has done this before, or has a copy of the Bentley repair manual, I'd be very grateful for some hints and tips.

Thanks Gyus

Haven't done this myself, but I have a copy of the Porsche Manual. I'll look it up and see if there is anything worth sending you in it.

John,

If there's anything in there about removing the blower assembly, that'd be a big help.

Cheers

I have done it on my 944 and assume it is similar. Are we talking about the £8ish arm on the drivers side (Ball and soket)? Some on titanic have had it replaced in situ - apparently an OPC used a 'special tool' which looked just like a crow bar.
However I decided to take mine apart and it was a good opportunity to remove some leaves from beside the heater blower.
Anyway I removed the plastic cover I think the wipwers had to be removed, then it is stuck along the windscreen and had to be carefully peeled back.
The heater blower has a series of bolts around its perimeter. Once these are undone it is still stuck in place with a mastic type substance on the bottom. I removed the grills from each end and gently persuaded it upwards with a suitable bar. Careful here as there are resistor coils in the nearside. Also it is important to make sure there are now bolts left holding it down before using too much force.
Once the blower is out of the way it is relatively easy to remove the wiper assembly (nice aluminium casting that you wouldn't normally see[:)]) but IIRC there were one or two slightly awkward bolts under the scuttle? panel.
Once out it is quite easy to assemble the arms - use lots of grease to prevent re-occurence.

Assembly is the reverse off removal as they say in all the worst manuals but noting the following points.
I replaced the mastic stuff around the heater as mine was past its best - I had some suitable (non setting) mastic in the garage.
The plastic cover I stuck to the windscreen with the double sided sticky stuff used to hold number plates on.
Some of the '44 boys swear by regular applications of chain lube to the socket assmebly to prevent re-occurunce.
Hope that helps,
Tony
Edited cos I cant spell

Thanks for that. If the weather's not terrible, I'll give it a go this weekend.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Thanks Stu,

Back to all-weather dirving now (as the clouds finally part).

Thanks to everyone who replied.
