Wiper woe

Having sorted the pertol fumes (sticky float, overfilling tank, user error[&:]), the driver side wiper stuck at vertical in a downpour today - the wiper arm had dropped out of the motor mechanism joint - 'popped' back in but not convincingly and soon worked it self out again . It's hard to tell if it's the wiper arm or motor arm end of the joint that's worn - they both look a bit tired - replacement for both required or is there another (cheaper!) way? All help appreciated.

I had exactly the same on my s2 and i got another motor complete with mechanism for £4.99 from ebay, but if you have no luck there a breaker would help you out unless you want all new parts!

There are nylon inserts on the linkages. If these have worn sufficiently then the ball can be worn and therefore the whole mechanism will need replacement as I don't think you can just replace the balls. The key here is to replace the relatively cheap dog-bone links before they wear too much to protect the balls as anything you can do to protect your balls is always a good plan in all aspects of your life!!!

Seems like problems like this come in waves. About 2 yrs ago everyone seemed to be replacing the linkages after similar experiences. I've not heard much about this over the past two years until now.

Much help - my balls look okay, which isn't something I expected to say - the nylon insert has worn out, so I guess I'll be looking for new arms on ebay, which is also not something I expected to say...

The linkages are actually pretty reasonable from Porsche, circa £20 - £30 if my memory serves me.

Any second hand ones on Ebay will possibly be at a similar age and wear level as your own

The arm was about £11 from PCT when I needed one. I fixed it myself in the end by putting heat-shrink tubing over the ball and added some lithium grease. It then 'clicked' back in and was fine thereafter.
