Wipers hesitating on intermittent wipe

Hi All,

When I first got the car the wipers would very occasionally hesitate on the return stroke in intermittent mode (rain sensor).

Coming back from Milton Keynes on the M1 last week in nasty wet conditions they started doing this on every stroke and there was a clunk/click everytime they started to move again after a pause in the parked position. if I switched them on continuously all was well. I experimented wiggling the stalk switch and winding the delay timer on the dash up and down, but it made no difference.

Clearly whatever is controlling the motor is not quite right, or I wonder if it is something to do with the motor parking the blades, as I guess it would have to do this on every wiper stroke when in intermittent, but not when they are on fully until you finally turn them off (if that makes any sense!).

Anyone had this issue? If so, what was the problem/fix? I find it very disconcerting in bad weather!

Cheers,

Tony

Are they rain sensing wipers, or adjustable intermittent timer delay wipers? If they are time delay, I have a feeling I have a spare relay from when I converted my 996 to rain sensing. You would be welcome to have it if you want to give it a try.

When the stalk is moved down to position one the wipers are activated by rain on the screen, but are still intermittently controlled by the delay timer knob on the dash...I don't think the rain sensing is the issue as it was full on rain on the M1 but not quite hard enough to warrant a full 100% setting. When they hesitate the blade is about halfway between the limits, on the way back toward the parked position....they stop for about 1/4 second then continue to parked position; stop; then start to sweep again after a small delay (I'm assuming determined by the dash knob) acompanied by a click/bang.

If it is hesitating half way through the wiper stroke it sounds more like a mechanical issue - especially if there is a banging noise when they come up out of the parked position. It might be that when the wipers are parked they are moving further down than when running continuously, and something is catching. Sounds like something might be loose on the mechanism.

Or the click is the relay, which is mounted under the right side of the dash I believe (assuming it is the same as the Boxster)...

food for thought - I'll investigate once the latest snow has gone and it's a bit further above freezing! I was hoping in a way that it may be a common problem, but clearly not.

Thanks for the advice Richard, I'll let you know what I find.

Tony

I replaced the motor on mine a while back. Have a look at this link to reference your set up that all is in order e.g the wiper arm linkage is set where it should be on the spindle of the motor.
