Wires in rear bumper

Hi, new member here. I just got a 2010 987.2. Very pleased to be back with a Porsche after a long break. I had a 944 a long time ago.
I am doing some bits to make it a bit more up-to-date. I’ve just fitted a new head unit to replace the CDR30 which has worked out well. It’s an Xtrons PE88CMPL which is the custom fit for a Boxster, almost! I intend To fit a reversing camera to it and have decided to ask a question before I start this weekend.
Has anyone ever fitted one without taking the rear bumper off?
i have just taken a number plate light off and pushed some flexible net curtain wire in to see if it will come out at the area behind the lights. I can hear it, but can’t see it. Rain has just stopped play so I thought I would come in and post this question before I take the entire bumper off and then realise I could have made this much easier.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mike

Its quite a big job
Because of the rubber seal between the outer and inner body you will need to remove the Bumper. You will also need to feed the wire along the inside of the bumper and interior
Bumper(PU) on 987 is not as easy as 986 but its unlikely to have any corrosion which will help
Jack the car up or put on Ramps
I torks socket screw just behind the rear wheel at the top of the wheel arch
2 under the rear PU as you come round from arch.
1 underneath the PU about 9" from centre
Remove the Lights (3 8mm nuts on the inside of lights and the wire unclips)
2 torks screws inside light area
Raise the Deflector and push out the pin inside each of the plastic securing piece and then gently remove this piece (Don't loose the pins)
You will then find one torks screw under each side of deflector
GET HELP to gently remove the PU disconnecting the Wiring loam and place carefull
(First time this took about 1 1/2 hours after that 1/2 hour!!)

You will then need to remove the rubber bung to allow all the cable from the camera to be fed through
I fed the cable through on the Near side as the little well inside the car is easier to remove than the Bonnet releases on the Off side

Feeding the cable through the boot means releasing the covers and you should be able to find a way of taking the cable from the boot to inside of car without drilling a hole. may need to put roof in Maintenance Mode

Take the wire along the inside of the carpet and up the inside of the front passenger well> THIS IS A NIGHTMARE as its sound insulation is glued in
Finally run the wire(s) behind the Glove Compartment

You will need to find a power source that is controlled by the ignition otherwise you will flatten the battery

I use a twin fuse unit that you can buy on eBay that allow a fuse the be replaced and a second fuse is used as a power source.
I use this source for Main Sat Nav (Garmin), My forward facing camera.

All this so you can use your new unit to look behind you. Don't think it can be used as a rear facing driving camera!!

Good luck it will take about 4-5 hours first time.

NIce to get the rear PU off anyway and check for rust / Mud exc.

Check that your Drain Holes are clear under the Rear Window

Then you need to get the front PU off to check for Debris in between the radiator and Condensor

Next Lesson Dropping the Engine!!!

Have fun

Hi Bill,
i didn't need to remove the bumper in the end. I removed the nearside rear light and a number plate light and fed a length of curtain wire through to be sure I could get a cable through.
I then drilled a hole in the bumper between the number plate lights, put a grommet in and fed the cable for the rear view camera through this.
The only problem I had was the cable for the camera (from Xtron) was only just long enough to reach the corner of the rear light cavity which made securing it fiddly. I used some tie wraps around the end of the cable to hold it in place.
After this it was fairly easy to find the reverse wire to the rear light and use solder sleeves to connect the power to the camera.
I used the curtain wire again to feed the video cable through the cabin and under the carpet to the centre console.
It all works now and I am over the moon both the new sat nav and audio along with the reversing camera.
Regards Mike

Yes, spoiler has to come off to remove the rear PU, 3 screws as you can just see when the spoiler is raised. Drill out the 3 plastic rivits that hold the top cover on, then undo the 2 allen bolts through the holes

You DO NOT have to drill out the Clips on the spoiler
the pins in the clips on the spoiler they PUSH OUT
Then remove the Clips
but you will need to retrieve the pins them BEFORE you take the lower spoiler off or you will loose them
a few pence from Porsche but they can be used again
