Wiring Loom Recall

Read something in Porsche Post about a previous 993 Wiring Loom Recall, where can I get more info on which cars were affected and check if mine has had the necessary work done, if required?

Thanks Nige

Don't want to worry you (It's done 100K miles [:)]) but if I recall it was because the wiring loom could burn out...

I am not sure, Maurice should be able to answer that. If you contact your Porsche Centre with your chassis number they can check on their computer system and confirm if your car has been done.

I am off to PC Tonbridge now to get my car booked in and discuss with the guys what they will be doing, will post a reply later today with some details.

Could be lots of cars in the Club that have not had the loom replaced and have a potential problem.

Just back from PC Tonbridge, the work involves replacing part of the engine bay loom. The rear bumper does not need removing, the work is carried out in the engine bay itself, they need the car for two days.

Asked the question about risk of fire etc and they advise that it is very low risk and is replaced by Porsche as a precaution. Apparrently a small number of cars in the States had a problem so Porsche issued the recall.

If anyone out there is not sure then it is worth checking with their PC. The work is carried out free of charge.

My 95 993 c2 nearly did go up in flames in may this year, if i did not have a battery isolator the car would have gone up in smoke. OPC Swindon were out standing, in within 3 days and only took a day, no charge at all. When i saw the old loom it was just a lump of melted copper wire. Have it done asap

I'll second that. Mine was almost as bad when the alternator had to come out in January this year. A disaster waiting to happen.

IIRC all 1995 993s were part of that recall, without exceptions. It´s strange to me that your local OPC gave you a different information.
It took a full day to have the replacement done, so 8 hrs for fitting seems to be realistic. My car was at the OPC some years ago, maybe 10 or so?
In Germany it wasn´t just a factory recall, Porsche was forced to do it by the state, because the loom could cause engine troubles with potentially higher emissions, again IIRC.

Maybe another OPC could be worth a try.

Good luck!

I should have said that I have ran it through the on-line checker and it came back clean. But that may be because the PC had erroneously updated the records after it was in ten odd years ago. They never instilled confidence in me at the time.

It's the fact that the manufacturing date of the loom is well inside the problem period, which according to the US stuff I've read is an instant replacement. That and obviously that it is showing signs of the issues.

I did come across the part number for the replacement loom a while back but I've no idea what I did with it, so another long web trawl for that.

Hi Clyde,

My car has definetely had the work done, as I remember Porsche Edinburgh doing it many years ago. If there is some visual difference you are welcome to look at my car to compare.

Cheers

Thanks for the offer Callum but I don't think that would really help. I know mine is the original wiring from the identification tag, which gives the manufacture date as 02/03/95 but don't know why I was told it didn't need replacing.

Pretty sure the part number is 000 043 204 61 but get the OPC to check before you order it
