Wiring on speakers

Miles Watkins

New member
I notice that I only have 6 wires coming from 8 speakers. 4 are fat and 2 are thin. I am hoping this is normal.

1. Can anyone tell me which wire does what?

2. Has anyone connected a stereo with a pair are wires for each speaker to this common negative (or so it appears) system?

The car has a Blaupunkt fitted and I have just bought a Sony from Halfords - to try and up the power a little. If all Blaupunkts are wired the same way I might as well exchange it to save messing about.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Miles

Miles,

A lot depends on what system you have. Is it the original - if so your option codes will help. If not original then it's anybody's guess I'm afraid.

Where have you got 8 speakers?? Most have woofer and tweeter in the doors and, maybe, two on the rear shelf. There is a wiring diagram for a Blaupunkt Berlin showing 8 speakers but all systems seem to show 4 pairs of wires with frequency filters between high and low range speakers.

Any more details might help.

Regards

Dave

Sorry Dave - bad explanantion on my part. There are four speakers (the ones in the doors being a pair of component speakers and counted as one).

Anyhow, I have decided to run new wires direct from the head unit to each corner to overcome the shared negetive issue as all the advice I can find on the web states that combing earth wires can cause in the internal amps to overheat. Also, the rewire will make a power amp upgrade easier in future.

Hi Dave, If your car has original speaker wiring, you may find that the cables run along the bulkhead and down towards your drivers seat, check which seat by looking underneath, you will spot pink wires quite possibly for a telephone mute, under the seat is where you should also find the rear speaker cables with correct wiring (neg and pos for l/hand + neg and pos for r/hand) the reason that I have mentioned this in particular is that to rewire the rear speakers as you have suggested (which you will not have to do) you would have to remove the glued don carpet etc.
When removing the stereo head unit you may find a green wire, put some insulation tape over this as I have read that otherwise it will cause your battery to drain. If you need further help, please do not hesitate to ask, Regards Chris
