Wishbone finishes - help!

Hello.

I'm rebuilding my suspension and i'm planning to get my wishbones powdercoated. Anyone aware of any issues with the lower ball joints if they're powdercoated?

Also any tips for extracting the bushes?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Many thanks!

Got to honest getting the bushes out is a pain in the hole.

I did mine and have access to alsorts of equipment..presses,lathes etc

I heated my centre pins up with a blow torch and pulled them out with grips. Then prised all the old rubber out and cut/collapsed the bush using hacksaw/punch before pressing out. The bush only has a thin wall and mine would not press through with a hydraulic press and a custom made tube. You need to be careful when cutting you don't damage the arm.

I then made an arbour and polished up all the centre pins on the lathe which was easy...mine came out perfect!
I then had the arms powder coated and reassembled which was a piece of cake.

It was a nightmare to do....lol well not a nightmare but took a good 1 1/2- 2hrs and I have loads of equipment to hand.

Powder coating looks good and mine were fine even when the car was realigned. Have fun!!

The center pins will have rubber residue on them which needs to be cleaned off. Make sure you have plenty of emery cloth to hand!!!

Argh.

Thanks for the advice - confirmed my suspicion not looking forward to it.

I phoned James at Zentrum who just laughed and said theyre a b****d and good luck!.

Going ahead with the powdercoat!

Looking forward to my H&Rs and powerflex bushes arriving tomorrow; having them delivered to work so the wife doesn't see :)

Just be careful that when they blast them before b
Powder coating they don't damage the bores.I had mine blasted before removing the old bushes. They then only needed a light going over after!

Have fun.....btw I fitted the h&r with bilsten and it looks great. Powder coating is worth the effort....I got carried away though and started powder coating loads of things! Covers on underside of car,all tin ware,fan,housing...brakes etc! Lol

You could always save yourself the hassle and buy re-conditioned wishbones from Hartech:

http://www.hartech.org/parts.html

I had powerflex bushes put in mine. The cost of the bushes plus the labour to do them put them at a similar price to the Hartech ones. And I doubt if the polybushes have added much performance over the rubber bushes in the Hartech ones.

While were on the powder coating theme just had all the engine tin wear powder coated. Ooo very nice!

Put power flex bushes in my wishbones. Cleaned back to factory finish then coated in Dinitrol.

Technically the factory finish is Wurth's equivalent of Dinitrol, which is slightly yellow in colour. Available at all good Indies, I have no doubt.

Thanks for the posts... If anyone's interested in my DIY antics I have been posting some photos up on Flickr

My engine rebuild has started at the wrong end of the car...:)

Thanks for your help here's the first wishbone blasted and ready for paint and bushes!

5hrs to remove the bushes. 3hrs the other side....
