Wishbone Woes

At my recent service I had an advisory about the front wishbones on my 81,000 mile 993 C2. Nothing serious yet, but the bushes are just beginning to show signs of perishing. I'm pretty sure they are the originals, so they are now over 13 years old.

Has anyone got any views on fixes for this ? I understand the new Porsche items are around £400 each side complete, but I did read in PP about a company that re-conditions them. Who, and how much ?

Yes they have jumped in price recently as part of Porsche's price restructuring.

I think Hartech may offer an exchange refurbishment service now using rubber replacement bushes.

Geoff Everett at Milford Microsystems can assist with better bushes mail@milfordmicros.co.uk he had them made out of polyurethane to a better spec (no voids or holes wh make them soft) Cost in his 2004 Email I have on file was then £128.66 inc VAT & UK postage

Lot's of previous debate on the use of polyurethane bushes. If you decide on these there are a number of places that offer the service. Hartech are the only place I have heard of offering original style rubber bushes.

I recently did them on my 964 (before the price rise) and went for OEM replacement wishbones instead of poly.

Just for info, Geoff Everitt now posts on Rennlist under the name "Red Rooster" and still talks about Powerflex favourably.

I just received a quote of £230 +vat each for the complete 'standard' control arm (RS are >260 ea.) and £150 +vat each to have the bushes replaced. Fitting would be on top of this. So replacing the bushes is a fair amount cheaper. (I did not ask whether the replacement bushes are 'standard' or to RS spec...)

I imagine there are bushes at both ends of this arm, do they all wear at the same rate?

I just looked on a US website and they list the control arms for the 993 at $185 per side. I'm very tempted to import a pair, if the shipping does not negate the saving and also if the US market arms are the same as the European ones.
 
I'd go for original Porsche bushes if I were you, also for the reasons that Maurice gives. I've heard that poly bushes can make ride too hard as well. Just IMHO. 'bout the only thing I've not done on my car now! Currently got the oil cooler out for a nice original Porsche replacement which is going in tomorrow evening...the fun is in getting your hands dirty!

Hmm. Thanks to you all - I'd better do some further investigating. I would rather use the Porsche original items, but if there is a £400 premium over re-manufactured ones, I would like to be pretty clear about the reasons for committing that kind of money. I am getting pretty fed up with their "price re-alignment policy" I must say.

Well, that explains it - I did not spot this before! They have a novel way of putting it:
"All parts are clean, tested, and 100% guaranteed. All parts are previously new, unless otherwise indicated."
...I mean, 'previously new'....

I almost got fooled by that as well; I can't remember how I finally discovered that they were very organised recyclers.
