The nylon bushes that line the tube on the end of the gearchange rod have worn away allowing the pin on the lever to wear aginst the tube making the pin barel-shaped and introducing a great deal of play. I had this on my 924 and 944s. ( the turbo has a different linkage). Being in an engineering based job I was able to remove the gearlever and grind the welds around the pin away enabing the removal of the pin. I sourced a 10mm or 12mm bolt (I am working from memory here) that fitted the tube, and machined circlip grooves into it and then welded it in place of the original, and re-assembled the linkage with copious amounts of grease. The alternative is a new lever from an OPC. Don't get one from a scrappy unles you absolutely have to as it will already be part worn.
