I drove the car out of the garage OK and left on the drive for a day. On trying to put it away the engine fired briefly but died and then would not start; no starter turning just a motor working in the engine bay (fuel pump ?) Left it overnight tried again but nothing other than the electric motor in the engine bay. The battery is good, fuel OK, fuses ok. Changed the DME but still no improvement...any suggestions.

Sounds like the fan for the heater is running, it sits on the top of the engine slightly to the left.
You may as well check you are getting 12V to the starter at the relays input (the small wire) and also the large wire (from the battery) while you have an assistant turn the key to crank. If you are your starter is faulty. I removed mine, tested it on the bench and refitted before my new one arrived and it is still working after approx 2 months. I didn't have an assistant to help me...

I had a similar problem which turned out to be the immobiliser, I was able to reset mine through a special connection in the glovebox. As it became a frequent problem I had the immobiliser replaced.
Prior to replacement the engineer was able to establish what the fault was by looking at the number and length of light flashes from the tell tale LED. It was easier and cheaper to replace rather than repair.

Immobiliser OK, battery OK, starter turns OK when jumped from battery, voltage at ignition wire to solenoid is 7v but if wire removed from solenoid it goes up to 12v. If jumped 12v to solinoid it works fine. Have therfore decided its the solenoid thats causing the problem. Next question is how do you get to the hex nut on the far side of the starter motor ? Any special tools available ?
I just use a 3/8" drive hex bit, a 3/8" extension and a 3/8" ratchet.

it dosent sound like your solenoid if when you put 12v to it, it works, you have a bad connection in the circuit from the battery to the starter. i would suggest either the immobiliser or the ignition switch, to check trace the circuit back to the ignition switch and see if your getting 7v out of the switch if so check voltage in is 12 if so faulty switch, but i think that if you check voltage into the immobiliser it will be 12 and probably only 7 out this is speaking from experience, whats happening is a contact or connection is breaking down under load find where and you will have your fault
