wont start :(

i got into my normally trusty car this morning after a nice cleaning session.

Car turned over and wouldnt fire. There is a strong smell of petrol so i know it is getting fuel alright. It then tried to fire but just kept turning over with the old "will it wont it" sound.

Then the bloody battery went flat.

Could it just be there wasnt enough juice in the battery to make it fire up? or has anyone else got any suggestions?
