Wood panels

Does anyone know what type of wood was used on the early 912 (and 911) dashboard fascias?

Fraser

The 912 never had them, the 911 ones are made from Teak.

Stuart's Dad made him a beautiful one which he has installed in his Race Car.
But him a pint or two and he may let you have a pattern [;)]

Fraser's car has wood panels on the dash

Stu's ones look really good in fact I did not know they were made until he told me. Nice touch.

But you can put what you want in to give it the look you want. It is nice to see abit of wood in a car I think.

Not sure when it was fitted, I like the wood look too, may need a bit of a touch up at some stage though.

The really early 912's had painted dashes - for a '65 car I would have thought that this would have been correct.

Although its hard to see the whole dash it would appear some things are incorrect for the year.

The ingnition/key is the later type
5 dials which is unusual although not incorrect for an early 912
Non-painted dash

Makes me think either the dash IS correct and a factory extra and the ignition is a later addition
or
the whole thing is a replacement from a later 911

Seems unlikely, though not impossible that its original.

More pics of the whole thing please!

btw the teak was originally a veneer rather than Stuarts solid example jfyi

I'll take a few more snaps tonight if I get the chance, I did think that there were a few things which may have implied the dash may not have been original but none of the fairly extensive history from about the last 20 years indicates that any dash replacement has occured. Guess it could easily have been done before that though.

Ah you have to be quick to beat Nick! Cheers that saves me a trip to the lockup tonight!

Coincidently there is a 912 in GT Purely Porsche with a wooden dash... isn't yours is it Fraser?

Doesn't look authentic though... the dash I mean.

Nope not mine I promise, now I've got one nobody is getting hold of it! Is that the one in the classified section - metallic red?

Fraser

actually having just read your other post I'm a month behind!

I've had wooden dash fronts made for my last and current 912 to the exact planform of the aluminium it replaces. I understand that they were an option offered for the early 911s in the first year of production but have no information whether they were an option that could be specified on the 912. Porsche claims the wooden dash was made from teak. I chose to go for cherry as its grain, natural oilyness and colour make it ideally suited for the purpose. Cherry is fairly easy to work with but cherry trees tend to be quite small and gnarled so finding a piece long enough (to keep the grain across the whole dash) that's 'true' might take a while, and expect to pay 30 quid from a timber merchants. Time to finish was about 10 hours careful work (in my case my dad, a carpenter by training). Wax to your desired colour - and you'll need to re-wax every 6 months or so to keep the lustre.

You wont go any quicker (!), but I thought it looked great - especially with the wood rimmed nardi wheel I had in my first car.

I'll dig out some photos if anyone is interested (and A Downward will make on request for 150 GBP + materials)

The genuine article - so maybe you really 'could' get the wood dash as an option?! Good price and should clean up nicely.

You could go the other minimalist early 912 option...
