hi i have a 1985 944 and want to know wot fuels people are putting in as it is 98 ron.[8|]

Only fuel with an Octane rating of 98 is Shell VPower (actually 99) or Tesco's Finest (or something like that...) which is 98 I think

All the other "Premium fuels" seem to be 97 Octane max

I'm using Shell V Power to maximise my boooost [:D] and that is 99 Ron (old Optimax was 98RON).

Some Tescos have their own brand 99 RON too.

My car will run on normal 95 RON as standard and so should yours.

My Lux definatley runs better on BP's premium whatever stuff, but you shouldn't be doing any harm on the regular. I have to say that at £1.15 per ltr last time I thought twice.....[]

As I understand it the ECU in the 944 can't compensate for the additional octane of V-Power and its equivalents. Even in my 330i I can't really tell the difference and that's been remapped specifically for it.

So I run my 944 on bog standard 95 RON and it's great.

That's true, but mine really does seem smoother on Ultimate. I don't ask why! [&:]

i also use castrol valvemaster plus lead replacement additive, does anyone else use these sort of things castrol redex etc ?????

My 325i runs better on tescos 99 RON stuff, sharper pick up and seems to rev harder but how much of that is psychological I'm not sure...[8D]

Added benefit (allegedly!) of the more expensive fuels are the better (?) detergents etc in them to maintain the efficiency of your fuel system... dons fire proof overalls[:D]

The early 944's were designed for high octane unleaded so you should use 97RON or more to get the best out of them. They'll run fine on 95.

I've tried my S on most and I can't tell any difference. I only put a tank through occasioanlly as I believe the detergents are better so keeping the injector system cleaner. That may be rubbish of course but it's what I thought I had read.

ORIGINAL: Nouveau

..But on a N/a?

The timing is setup up for super unleaded on the early cars. Normal unleaded works fine but you are losing a little - probably undetectable

I tend to do every fourth fill up with optimax. I do notice the difference when it is using that. Apart from that I don't use any specific brand.

I rarely get the chance to choose.[&o]
I have to be honest I can't tell any real difference but I don't drive my S2 aggressively. She's a 20 year old lady afterall !

Its supposed to be chipped ? so I suppose I should find out what she's set up for [;)]

'89S2 always runs on high-octane (whatever variety).

Yes, it is more expensive, but it does run more smoothly on it and the extra MPG compensates (more than compensates) for the extra price, leading to a lower £/mile cost. (Yes, I am sad enough to have tracked every fill-up and consequent MPG over the last 18 months ... [8|] )
