If i got my 88 944 serviced at a regular garage....i do love my car, just feel like the local porsche specialists smile when they see me coming!!!! would it matter that much????

Hi Chris,

I use a specialist 20 miles from me. Their hourly rate is the same as the little "back alley" garage that do my van and our Subaru. I'd trust the local guys to do most work, but not things like clutch where intimate knowledge of the cars is bound to simplify things and save time, and money. The specialist should also know the weak areas of the cars and be able to carry out preventative work, and have easy access to the right parts.

Don't know where you are, but around the London area anything less than £50 per hour is a bargain rate, and I think it's worth using someone who is a 944 enthusiast!

I use a local sports car specialist and I think he charges about £35.00 per hour still.
he is very much in demand and I often have to wait 3-4 weeks for a booking but its worth it.
He took 2x days to do my w/pump and belts on my 928 so only charged me for one day !(all the bolts sheared off )

I would ask around locally and see who is recommended. For servicing and brakes, steering, suspension etc a local jock is fine .

Not in theory however my speicalist doesn't just carry out the usual service items such a oil, filter and spark plug changes. He carries out a multi-point check around the car and provides me with a detailed report of the cars general state with any advisories. He also records things that he is keeping an eye on. I doubt you'd get this level of service from anyone who doesn't know these cars inside out and knows what specific things to look out for. That is the benefit of using a specialist. I really rate this service as it saves me getting under the car to check things out myself - as I get older I'm loosing the appetite for working on the car myself.

agreed - a specialist will have parts in stock and offer a good price - a freind was charged £17 for a fram oil filter for a 944s by a "normal" garage - that was just wrong!
