Would not start

Hi

Went out in my 964 today, started no problems. Parked for about fifteen minutes and got back in the car to drive off. The car would not start (turn over) all electrics looked like they were working - no warning lights came on.

Try to start it twice more changed the DME spare over - still no luck. I then left it a further fifteen mins without doing anything. Had one more go and got it started and it seemed fine. It had been sitting in the garage for a week on it T/charger, but it has never let me down before. Was hoping to take it to Hedingham Castle tomorrow.

Anyone had similar problems or any ideas.

Thanks
Helen

Hi Helen,

Would the car turn over at all??. If not then it could be immobiliser or a starter motor problem. Did you try to arm then de-arm the alarm system?

Should be a simple fix.

two things come to mind. First the starter motor and second the imobiliser. I would suspect the starter motor. After that you get into dodgy fuel pumps and random electrics if it is the starter motor there is no easy way to check unless you can hear clicks as the ignition is turned on ie it tries to turn but can't due to poor wires or worn bushes etc. Can't think of anything else. You could try a system adaptation but I can't see why it would go out of setting. What if anything do you hear when turning the key?

I think that the DME relay controls the fuel pump so i dont think that would help. Is the battery in good condition? Check the wires on the battery and also the negitive connection to ground it maybe a bad earth.

I dont think that a system adaption would help as it sound like it was not even turning over. It could well be the brushes on starter or immobiliser. I also cant think of anything else. Let us know the outcome. Could be worth hooking the car up to a scantool to see if the computer registered any faults but i am not sure if it would show anything up.Where are you based?

Hi

Thank you both for your reply.

I have looked at another post regarding battery, and the windows are working in the correct sequence, door closed - key out and the window will not work. Door open - key out and the window works. There is no CCU fitted to this car.
I have just been out to the garage and it started first time. Battery seems ok - light/radio/electrics look fine.
Left it for a further twenty mins and it has started ok again. Hubby is going to check all again starting with the brushes - it may have just been one of those things!!!
When I took it out this afternoon only went about a mile, when I pulled over for about fifteen minutes. Got back in the car and it would not turn over, there was no clicking noise at all, but all lights came on as usual just before it normally starts. Phoned Hubby who came with spare imobiliser key, (did not need it) time he got to me I had managed to get it started? pew! (not sure what I was going to tell him about his car I thought I would just take it for a spin) we are based in Berkshire - R19 Region.

Thanks
Helen

I had starting problems that sounds similar (not turning over), I changed the battery and checked the grounds on the starter and battery, not sure what fixed it as I did all this at the same time but i think it was the ground on the starter motor.

I had a similar problem, It was suspected as being caused internally within the battery, some sort of short circuit, dont know if a charger would cause warping/shorting in the Cells?? but a replacement battery sorted it.

good luck

Hi

Thank you all for your answers, not sure how old the battery is, but I think that will be the next step. I'm hoping it was a one off
