Wrong temperature reading

My 1998 996 temperature sensor appears faulty. I am getting readings from 19degrees to 38 degrees showing, when obviously this is incorrect (unless we are experiencing very erratic sun spots) Is this just the sensor by the front requiring changing or is there a problem with something else at the other end behind the dash? It's not really an urgent issue but strange that it's only just started to occur. John

Most likely the sensor, or perhaps a dodgy connection. Is it properly clipped into the bracket? Sometimes they drop down, and get close to the radiator, giving a false reading.

A new sensor isn't expensive. £19.30 inc vat. Part No: 958.505.535.00

In my experience its when the sensor falls out of the clip in the grille and flaps about near the radiator a quick visual check should confirm

Got my car back from garage after having new s/s exhaust manifolds fitted (glad I didn't attempt this) and found the sensor has fallen behind the bumper grill (must have been when I removed it to replace the horn
Unfortunately, because I have fitted grill mesh, I have to remove the bumper (again) in order to get to the trapped sensor.
Thanks all for pointing out such an obvious solution
John

cut a small hole in your mesh grill to poke the sensor through. otherwise the pressure of the grill when you reassemble will pop it out again

You continue to be my hero John. There is growing complexity in what you'll tackle - I'm still only washing & polishing oh and driving!

Paul.
