Wrong vin number DVLA

Got letter from DVLA telling me that Porsche records, and DVLA records differed as regards vin number, and that I would be receiving a replacement (red) log book with adjustments made,
Anybody else had this, they blamed a clerical error,
My car was registered new in surrey, so don't know if this a regional thing.

Don't accept it. This will be suspicious to a future buyer and reduce the value of your car.

I had a similar problem (although was not the VIN) with my Transit purchased new last January. They claimed they could not replace the original with a new original even through it was their error (actually I think it was partly the dealer's fault but I knew I'd lose battle if I went that route because the dealer had no more power over DVLA than me). Anyway after about 4 exchanges of letters a correct, backed dated, original V5 arrived.

So does the VIN on your V5 not match the VIN on your car?

I'm really surprised that the DVLA (a) checked it and (b) bothered to let you know. From the time when I was 964 Register Sec I can tell you that the number of errors in VIN numbers that were apparently copied from the V5 are HUGE. The most common mistakes are the confusion of things like 0 and O, S and 5 etc. etc.

I think a lot of the time the error is created by the registering dealer. I can't say that I've ever come across a situation where DVLA has queried a VIN and I would be very suspicious of this being a phishing enquiry. Tread carefully would be my recommendation.

Dave

I too thought some kind of scam, however looking at both v5. One letter 5 was replaced with a S,
The vin number is long, and to be honest had to look at it a couple of times the error was mid way along the number
The new red v5, has arrived, DVLA have asked for the old v5 to be sent back, but think I will keep both

As above, thought this was dodgy but only one character is altered on my V5, an "S" to a "5". So I've concluded it's not a scam.
I've a scanned copy of the original safely tucked away and as usual will scan the new one for safety, so I'll be sending back the useless paperwork to DVLA.
Besides, I've spotted they have my postcode wrong so I might as well take advantage of the post paid envelope to sort that out.

Can you imagine Ford or Vauxhall doing this?

Yes, I too had this letter and after a few enquiries discovered that DVLA do audit registration data with manufacturers from time to time and that in my case the error was due to a transcription at DVLA misreading a "5" for an "S". I also received an amended "European" style registration book the V5 (ie red now not blue), however what has not been mentioned on these posts is the MOT document which, due to the DVLA records error, also appears with an incorrect VIN number, although all other details (reg number, chassis number etc.) are correct. When I checked mine and realised I had the same error on my MOT certificate I had to contact the nearest VOSA office, arrange to go to them with my documentation, and they amended the electronic records and issued an amended certificate at no cost. I would urge anyone who has had this log book issue check their MOT document for this. Interestingly the MOT stations are required to check all details before issuing a new MOT certificate, mine has had 4 MOT's and all went undetected until now !!

Looks like Porsche can not tell their Ss from their Zs I have had this letter and so has my son. I suspect this error has run into thousands of owners [8|]

I recently bought an '02 996T, and it was only when my wife looked at the car's VIN, and V5, that for the first time had someone noticed a difference. There were 3 incorrect digits, and I have just received the correct V5. No idea how an 8 year old car can go so long with no one noticing/correcting it. Even the place I bought it through hadn't noticed, but then they weren't alone.

I had the DVLA letter on the Cayenne and received the new style book
It would seem that the OPC made the error the chassis number was
////2-zzz etc the opc put zz2 when they sent the paperwork to DVLA
I guess it came to light when customers were ordering bits and quoting wrong VIN.
The number on the slip inside the service book was always correct
