"X50" 944 turbo

Folks - I have to tell you 'cause I think you will be interested and I am delighted.
- my daily driver is an '89 944T, I really like the dynamics and practicallity of 2+2 seats, hatchback, fuel economy, low running costs, Q-car profile. I do about 10k miles per year now, so not too many.

My ideal 944t would be what Porsche would market today as an "X50" 944turbo, - increased performance and Sports handling without going to an RS with thinner glass and aluminuim panels.

Well, on Thursday this week I had a test drive in what seemed to me to be just that.

Its based on an '89 944t, - its Red and in fact its build No is about 80 cars earlier than my Black one on the production line.

After a 100 mile test route on M'way, Town traffic, A&B Roads, a brim to brim check returned 24.7mpg on mixed driving. (I dont recall being overtaken). 20 minutes with a torch below the car on a 2 Post Lift confirmed it is to all intents and purposes "like new". The attention to detail involved in the refurb and rebuild is breathtaking. If you looked at it and some-one told you it had 12000 miles on it you would not argue. The Service Records have been restarted from the Refurb date, and the Mileometer passed 2000 miles on the test run. I was told the previous reading but it is irrelevant.

The engine which is based on a Perfect Bore block, with blueprinted internals, starts and runs as standard 951, but on the road there is a freedom to the power delivery which is hard to describe. I suppose extermely tractable is the best description, and if you hold the gear and allow it to rev' then there is a pretty robust power delivery. All the time it feels balanced and strong, never thrashy or harsh. BHP was not mentioned, but I recall a guide 340lb/ft.

It has no issues with Sills, Diff, Caliper Lift, Rubber Seals, Oil Leaks, Air Con, Fuel Lines, Wheel Bearings, - all the little things are attended to properly. I could suggest it is better than new, - the Front Fogs which are new complete units - have been retrofitted with Stainless fasteners, and it comes on Toyo's.

It is not fitted with "track upgrades" so KW, Big Reds, etc are absent - but it has M030, LSD, which makes a nice road car with standard ride height. I was unsure of the Comfort Seats but they are growing on me, and the wing decal is absent which is consistent with the seats.

The car was built by Simon Peckham, - some of you may know the car - and it really is, to me, a new X50 power-kit 944 turbo. Anyway - I intend to bring it to live in Ireland in about 10 days time. You can imagine how excited I am [:)]

Simon may post a few images if there is interest from anyone, - but pls note: its Sold, I can show you my receipt [:)]

It sounds like Simon's car went to a good home. Congratulations to you both.

Congratulations George, you will not be disappointed [:)]

The absolute obsessive attention to detail that Simon applied to my engine build has been continued with his restoration of that car and I think it will be a looooooong time before you have to spend any more money aside from regular servicing.

So Simon (if you're reading this), what's next in your workshop? [8D]

Please let us ogle some pictures and specifications. I have a hankering for a ultra stealth 944 turbo. Lightened and tweeked.

This would give me somthing to keep the dream alive whilst i find a suitable car to start with....

That sounds like the essence of what i'm trying to achieve with my car. Sounds great. I remember Simon posting some pics of the bare shell after respray (assume this is the same car) so sounds like he has completed a proper ground up rebuild of the entire car. It's great that there are people like Simon around. I'm sure you'll enjoy the car George. You'll have to give us periodic updates to let us know how you're getting on.

ORIGINAL: George Elliott. Anyway - I intend to bring it to live in Ireland in about 10 days time.

Dont forget to PM me or ikillcopiers (Thomas) if you are coming anywhere near Galway. We would love to see that car [;)] You are not alone...![:D]

Congratulations.

I met with Simon and drove this car, and agree that it is fantastic. The engine work was amazing, with such attention to detail. And the car drove so well.

Enjoy!

Kind regards

Steve

Would someone kindly host some pictures for me so I don't have to re-size them all?
Thanks in anticipation!

Email them to me Simon and I'll sort it out [:)]

Paul is thinking 'he can build a blueprinted engine with clearances down to the thousandth of a millimetre, yet he can't blummin sort out a simple photo' [8|]

Thank you Paul,

Just to update this, I picked up the car from Simon on Thursday. I should probably keep my opinions for a few thousand miles, but...

This is the best car I ever owned[:)].

I'm extremely lucky.

Simon & George,

Congratulations what clearly is a superb car in every aspect.

Exceptionally well executed, and a pleasure to view.

Stu

Congratulations Geroge

Now put some MILES on it! [:D] How many did Simon do in the two years since he built it? 1500? 2000? Disgraceful behaviour [;)]

Simon - time to concentrate on the burgundy one now [8D]
