Folks - I have to tell you 'cause I think you will be interested and I am delighted.
- my daily driver is an '89 944T, I really like the dynamics and practicallity of 2+2 seats, hatchback, fuel economy, low running costs, Q-car profile. I do about 10k miles per year now, so not too many.
My ideal 944t would be what Porsche would market today as an "X50" 944turbo, - increased performance and Sports handling without going to an RS with thinner glass and aluminuim panels.
Well, on Thursday this week I had a test drive in what seemed to me to be just that.
Its based on an '89 944t, - its Red and in fact its build No is about 80 cars earlier than my Black one on the production line.
After a 100 mile test route on M'way, Town traffic, A&B Roads, a brim to brim check returned 24.7mpg on mixed driving. (I dont recall being overtaken). 20 minutes with a torch below the car on a 2 Post Lift confirmed it is to all intents and purposes "like new". The attention to detail involved in the refurb and rebuild is breathtaking. If you looked at it and some-one told you it had 12000 miles on it you would not argue. The Service Records have been restarted from the Refurb date, and the Mileometer passed 2000 miles on the test run. I was told the previous reading but it is irrelevant.
The engine which is based on a Perfect Bore block, with blueprinted internals, starts and runs as standard 951, but on the road there is a freedom to the power delivery which is hard to describe. I suppose extermely tractable is the best description, and if you hold the gear and allow it to rev' then there is a pretty robust power delivery. All the time it feels balanced and strong, never thrashy or harsh. BHP was not mentioned, but I recall a guide 340lb/ft.
It has no issues with Sills, Diff, Caliper Lift, Rubber Seals, Oil Leaks, Air Con, Fuel Lines, Wheel Bearings, - all the little things are attended to properly. I could suggest it is better than new, - the Front Fogs which are new complete units - have been retrofitted with Stainless fasteners, and it comes on Toyo's.
It is not fitted with "track upgrades" so KW, Big Reds, etc are absent - but it has M030, LSD, which makes a nice road car with standard ride height. I was unsure of the Comfort Seats but they are growing on me, and the wing decal is absent which is consistent with the seats.
The car was built by Simon Peckham, - some of you may know the car - and it really is, to me, a new X50 power-kit 944 turbo. Anyway - I intend to bring it to live in Ireland in about 10 days time. You can imagine how excited I am [

Simon may post a few images if there is interest from anyone, - but pls note: its Sold, I can show you my receipt [
