Xenon HiD lights

i have 1a 1999 C4 cab and am considering a HID xenon conversions kit. 2 questions that i hope my learned bethren can assist me with
1 when i contacted porscheshop they stated i needed automatic light levelling and headlamp washing which i dont have so is this conversion out

2. If possible should i go for cheap conversion kits 60-70 (which one bets) and which is bets temp (6000K) or should i look for secondhand litronic porsche kit (£500-1000) and can headlamp washers be retrofitted
 
I think you'll find that the HID conversion kits are fine, and several of us have done it in the past. Original Fitment Litronics or Bi-Xenon have automatic level control and headlamp washers, but I think it is a grey area as far as legality goes on aftermarket kits. Proof of the pudding is at MOT time, but I never had any problems with the ones I fitted to my C2. I went for the 4300K bulbs in mine, which give a white light. The 6000K ones give a blue light, and look a bit 'chavvy' to me, but each to their own.

i found this DVLA statement on HID conversion. see below so MOT not as stringent or a whole headlamp conversion. Richard you are a library of Porsche info


"Therefore a HID headlamp unit sold in the after market should:

1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component.

2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place).

3. Comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned.

In practice this means:

1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.

2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal.

In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above."
 
I've not had any issues with my mot since fitting my HIDs albeit on another car and not my 996. Also it's nice to have the ballasts nicely tucked away out of site when they're being fitted. I'm in west London if you at ant point want to have a look. Thanks
 
hi ive had no problem with my chavvy 6000s at mot i think the 6000s are fine about as white as you can go any higher is in the blue zone the only problem is you then have to do something with the high beam / fog and side lights to make it all look right
 
another vote for HIDs4U ( other supplies are available) ... or rather another vote for the after effect of fitting the HID kits to my C2 Cab. I wont say they turn night into day, but they help. Regards the MOT thiung, my MOT station are v happy, and I have had no problems, I do think though they need to be accurately set. I was lazy and had mine fitted by the Independent Porsche garage that looks after my car. They did come accross some small deviations necessary from the instructions in the wiring.
