Strange - are you sure you got an H1 kit?
Mine were a tight slide into the hole - indeed I have heard of people drilling the hole a little larger, and others say that removing a tight HID bulb after it's been in there a few years can be a problem - hope that does not happen when I have to change one of them.
But anyway - from memory the metal just slides in beind the glass part of the bulb and is smaller than the glass part (all from memory but it just was not a problem).
Most likely you have wrong kit (or people who supplied packed wrong kit in right box).

Really must do my high-beams.

The lamp filament fits in aperture but the metal flange around the bulb does not fit into the spring clip ..... will have another look tomorrow !!!!
