Xenon Upgrade

Would like to improve my 'standard' lights and thinking about the options (Have a Cayman Gen II but assume Boxster is identical):

1 New 55w H7's "xenon" - lots on eBay !!!

2 Upgrade kit

Anyone done or considered doing either ?

Any thoughts on advantages/disadvantages welcome

Thanks

Mike

I had a HID kit fitted, don't bother as I had to take them out.

I now have Ring Ultimate 120% Xenon gas bulbs, (120%) don't laugh you can actually see the improvement over the poor standard bulbs.

About £ 15.00 on e-bay now I think.

Got to say that I have sometimes been in the car and wondered if I had blown a headlight bulb and was running on sidelights, they are so awful. On country roads I almost always have the fog lamps on as well they are that bad! So the eBay type replacements are really that cheap and have that much effect then? May take a look...

I really didn't notice any difference with halfords bulbs .......I paid nearly 500 quid for a xenon aftermarket fitment at opc which gave brilliant light .......but drained the battery so I had to be rescued numerous occasions.

That was 4 porsche ago !!

Now I make sure every porsche I buy either new or nearly new has bi xenons .the only way to make sure I have great lights and no problems !!

Standard bulbs are rather poor yellow light and litronics are a significant improvement, HID kits were as good and despite what many said about needing self leveling and washers to comply with the law - that was not true - after market were exempt from needing those two aspects, I fitted them and no problems come MOT time, however, the MOT was beefed up significantly in 2012 and im not sure what the current legislation is regarding after market fitment.

But, be carefull and sceptical about bulbs being offered that deliver a brighter light as many are simply higher wattage bulbs, ignore all the hype about "Zenons" as all those bulbs are standard bulbs just filled with Zenon gas instead of Halogen, and that does not make them brighter.
Construction and use limit bulb wattage to 55 watts so the 100 watt bulbs will fail MOTs, but, the main problem with higher wattage is heat, 100watt bulbs will melt the outer lens if they are left on whilst you are in either very slow moving traffic or stationary as there is no airflow to cool them down - first sign of this is discolouration of the lens.

Sorry but MOT regs are changing and Xenons fitted without headlamp washers are likely to fail test from this year.

You only need washers if the bulbs are greater than a certain luminance. The new Boxster and Cayman 'non-washer' equipped cars are still Xenons but the bulbs are less wattage than those with 'washers'
